Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS–related work, Seaspan Shipyards is owning the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.
Seaspan's Innovation team is actively developing in several technology areas including digital twins, green technologies, and autonomy in support of use cases for future vessels, engineering services, and in-service support. Our innovation program includes current and planned projects seeking scalable solutions that integrate emerging technologies using real-time sensors, 3D spatial information, clean tech, and visualization technologies to improve Seaspan's shipbuilding and refit business
Working with Innovation's project leaders and experts across the organization, the Innovation Strategy Intern collects and prepares materials and data that capture strategy, stakeholder needs, and business benefits across Innovation's four technology areas:
- Digital Twin: Utilizing on-board sensors and business processes, AI/ML models are used to monitor vessel equipment health and transition to predictive maintenance.
- Green Technology: Investigations and analysis of emerging green and clean technology solutions to meet current and future climate targets.
- Robotics and Automation: Adoption, testing and evaluation use of autonomous and semi-autonomous systems for heavy-industrial applications that maintain quality and deliver improved worker safety.
- Advanced Manufacturing: Accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies to improve timeliness, quality, safety and efficiency of our manufacturing processes.
What you'll do
The successful applicant for this position will support business wide engagements with internal stakeholders and provide day-to-day support to Innovation managers and engineers while performing specific activities, including:
- Working with Innovation and other shipyard team members and users to understand user needs, system requirements and appropriate test cases.
- Participation in the development of Innovation's technology and business roadmaps.
- Support Innovation project and technical leaders identify and respond to new business opportunities within an evolving competitive landscape.
- Perform assigned work including, as appropriate: literature and online research, project and stakeholder meetings, and business focused reviews of project technologies and applications for relevant use cases and applications.
- Capture, document, and communicate the technology applications, business cases, roadmaps, and other outcomes using demonstrations, presentations, and reports
- Lead and facilitate meetings, updates, and other demonstration activities with technology partners, team members, and, as needed, senior staff.
- Engaging with the wider team, stakeholders and other departments to manage progress and align Innovation's vision.
What you'll bring
- Enrolled in a Master of Business Administration degree program, with an undergraduate or higher degree in a technical discipline. Program specialty in Strategy and Analytics is preferred.
- Senior undergraduate students with experience in technical fields and developing technical development strategies may also be considered.
- Candidates must have experience and knowledge in the process and complexities of developing or delivering technical solutions. Previous experience in shipbuilding or heavy manufacturing is not required.
- Experience in conducting business analysis including business cases, competitive assessments, bids and proposals, and strategy or roadmap development with strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Curiosity and experience developing business to technical outcomes in any of the following:
- Industry 4.0
- Advanced Manufacturing
- IOT sensor networks
- Digtialization and Artificial Intelligence for data analytics
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction and manage their time optimally
- Demonstrated troubleshooting skills and using collaboration and coordination to drive successful outcomes
- Exposure to developing successful corporate or product strategies that blend business and technical knowledge through exposure to industry experience, class projects or co-op terms.
- Excellent proficiencies using Microsoft Excel/Word/PowerPoint and other applications.

We require a full-time commitment Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $36.00/hour.
