The Quality Assurance Manager is a hands-on operational leader responsible for solving quality problems, strengthening quality policies, and driving consistent execution across the organization. This role requires active ownership of issues, strong decision- making, and a visible presence on the shop floor.
The QA Manager leads the QC Inspectors and QA Leads, training, setting priorities, reinforcing standards, and building a disciplined, high-performing quality team. This position is accountable for effective problem solving, root cause analysis, and corrective action, as well as for strengthening procedures, controls, and audit readiness.
The QA Manager owns quality reporting and communication, ensuring risks, non-conformances, and corrective actions are clearly documented and communicated to management, customers, and auditors. This is a fast-paced, hands-on leadership role requiring daily engagement with machining, fabrication, welding, and inspection activities, aligned with ISO 9001 and CSA N299 requirements.
Duties & Responsibilities
Quality Management & Compliance
Own, maintain, and continuously improve the Quality Management System in accordance with ISO 9001 and CSA N299
Ensure compliance with customer, regulatory, and process requirements
Lead and support internal, external, customer, and regulatory audits
Develop and strengthen quality policies, procedures, work instructions, and controls to improve consistency and audit readiness
Work closely with executive leadership to prioritize customers, work orders, and strategic initiatives
Shop Floor & Inspection Leadership
Provide visible, hands-on quality leadership on the shop floor
Oversee and participate in inspection and acceptance of machined, fabricated and welded components
Oversee and support machining and welding-related quality activities including but not limited to in-process inspection, adherence to and development of WPS
Guide production and quality teams in resolving quality issues in real time Nonconformance & Corrective Action
Lead the creation, investigation, and resolution of internal and external nonconformances
Drive effective root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA)
Manage customer communication related to quality issues, deviations, and concessions
Manage suppliers and third parties by conducting supplier audits, investigating issues, issuance of Supplier Corrective Action Reports (SCARs)
Verify effectiveness of corrective actions and prevent reoccurrence
Team Leadership & Development
Lead, mentor, and develop QA/QC Leads, QA/QC Inspectors and other company staff
Assign priorities, manage workloads, and reinforce accountability across the company
Provide coaching, training, performance management and succession development
Reporting, Documentation & Calibration
Own quality reporting, ensuring clear communication of risks, trends, and performance metrics to management
Oversee performance measurement and KPIs, benchmark and develop improvement plans
Oversee and support preparation and control of quality documentation including, but not limited to:
o Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), FAIs, PPAPs, FMEAs, etc.
o Dimensional inspection reports and in-process dimensional inspection reports
o Complete customer and job QA packages
Ensure job travellers, inspection records, and process documentation are completed and followed
Maintain and control the calibration system for all inspection and measuring equipment, ensuring compliance, traceability, and audit readiness
Safety, Continuous Improvement & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Ensure compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and internal safety policies
Promote a safe working environment through hazard identification, risk mitigation, and employee training
Participate in safety audits, incident investigations, and corrective action implementation
Promote shop cleanliness, organization, and efficient workplace practices
Participate in recruitment, onboarding, training, performance reviews, and disciplinary processes
Collaborate with Purchasing to issue purchase orders for quality related items
Skills, Qualifications & Experience
5–7+ years of progressive experience in a QA or QC role within a machine shop or heavy manufacturing environment (machine shop experience is required)
Prior supervisory experience, including oversight of inspectors or quality personnel, with the ability to set priorities, assign work, and hold team members accountable
Strong working knowledge of ISO 9001 quality systems; experience supporting CSA N299 or other nuclear quality programs is a strong asset
Demonstrated experience working in regulated industries such as nuclear, defense, oil & gas, or power generation
Proven ability to lead root cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), and nonconformance management
Ability to read, interpret, and apply engineering drawings, specifications, codes, and customer requirements
Hands-on, shop-floor-focused leadership style with the ability to make decisions and solve problems in real time
Proficiency with ERP systems and calibration management software
Experience maintaining inspection and measuring equipment calibration systems
Strong understanding of inspection methods and dimensional verification
Experience with CMM, FARO arms, or equivalent measurement systems is an asset
Welding quality experience (WPS/WPQ, weld inspection, or fabrication quality) an asset
Willingness and flexibility to work extended hours and weekends as required to support production schedules, audits, and customer commitments
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interface effectively with management, customers, auditors, and shop personnel.
Salary Range: Up to $120k
