ABOUT TSLEIL-WAUTUTH NATION SCHOOL:
The Tsleil-Waututh Nation (TWN) School provides a culturally immersive, Indigenous land-based education program for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Our mission is to nurture the well-being of students, families, and the community through an educational framework anchored in TWN laws of truth, family, culture, and well-being.

JOB SUMMARY:
At TWN School, we offer a unique learning program and seek teachers who are passionate about inspiring students through a culturally relevant lens. As a Teacher Teaching on Call (TTOC), you will play a vital role in maintaining the continuity of this program. You will be responsible for covering classroom absences and may also serve as a resource teacher, providing essential support to the broader learning environment. The TOC's primary duty is to deliver day plans provided by the classroom teacher. However, the TOC must be flexible, able to adapt or create plans as needed, and respond to direction from school administration to meet student needs. It is also expected that the TOC communicate with the classroom teacher at the end of the day to provide a summary of events and progress. The TOC should be prepared to participate in field trips and various school activities, including outdoor events in all weather conditions, and must be physically capable of engaging in these activities. This role requires flexibility, adaptability, and a commitment to fostering a positive and supportive learning environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instructional Delivery & Adaptability
- Deliver lessons and approved curriculum as directed by the regular teacher or administration.
- Implement innovative teaching strategies, including discussions, audio-visual presentations, field trips, and guest speakers.
- Ensure students remain actively engaged and empowered to take responsibility for their learning.
Student Support & Inclusion
- Support students with diverse learning needs and implement Individual Education Plans.
- Work with small groups or individual students within the classroom to reinforce learning.
- Lead and motivate students in activities that promote physical, mental, and social development.
Classroom Leadership & Safety
- Lead the classroom education team, including education support staff.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming learning environment.
- Provide a welcoming and safe learning environment and building positive rapport with students, families, and staff is essential.
- Provide regular reports to the Principal or Vice-Principal and participate as a member of the Community Development team.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: At least a Bachelor of Education Degree
- Certification: Valid BC Teaching Certificate (or eligibility through the BC Teacher Regulation Branch).
- Classification: Valid Teacher Qualification Service (TQS) Category Card.
- Security: Must successfully pass a Criminal Record Check – Vulnerable Sector.

- Indigenous Education: Ability to integrate Indigenous pedagogy and social-emotional learning into daily instruction.
- Social-Emotional Competency: Strong self-awareness, empathy, and relationship-building skills.
- Instructional Excellence: Proven ability to use diverse assessment techniques and engagement strategies for inclusive classrooms.
- Collaboration: A team-oriented mindset for working with parents, staff, and the community.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Demands
- Physical activity for outdoor education, physical education, as well as in-class. Need to be able to walk for sustained periods, and able to navigate uneven terrain.
- Manual dexterity required to operate a computer and A/V system.
Mental Focus
- May deal with youth who can, at times, be demanding and challenging. Must be able to remain patient and use a trauma informed approach, engage in conflict resolution or crisis management at times.
- May have to manage a number of projects at one time, and may be interrupted frequently.
Environmental Conditions
- Interacts with students, staff, families, community members, employees, management and the general public.
- Noise levels may escalate during activities, events and outings.
- Need to be comfortable being outdoors and leading outdoor activities.
