The Opportunity
Your Impact Starts Here – Join our growing Contaminated Sites team in Alberta as an Environmental Liability Assessment Assessor, helping oil & gas clients meet their regulatory and liability obligations across the full lifecycle of their assets. You'll work closely with Project Managers, technical leaders, and clients to navigate the Alberta Energy Regulator's (AER's) Liability Management Framework, deliver high‑quality assessments and cost estimates, and support smarter decisions about asset retirement and remediation.
You'll be part of a close‑knit Environmental Liability Management team, with access to the depth and breadth of expertise that comes with a large, multidisciplinary organization – including mentorship, technical collaboration, and clear pathways for growth.
Your Impact
- Collaborate in a team environment with Project Coordinators, Project Managers, Senior Project Directors/Technical Leads and field staff to deliver integrated liability and contaminated sites projects for oil & gas clients in Alberta.
- Review baseline environmental investigations, preliminary site investigations, and detailed site investigations to understand site status within the Alberta Contaminated Lands Framework and inform liability strategies.
- Prepare high‑quality Site-Specific Liability Assessments (SSLA) and other liability assessments that align with the latest AER Liability Management Framework requirements.
- Develop and refine cost estimates for Provisions / Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO), supporting accurate financial reporting, capital planning, and risk management for client portfolios.
- Apply rigorous quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) practices to ensure the integrity, defensibility, and consistency of all assessments and deliverables.
- Prepare and coordinate client-ready reports, submissions, and supporting documentation, including using AER's OneStop for report submissions and updates where required.
- Support due diligence for acquisitions and divestments of oil & gas properties by assessing environmental liabilities, retirement obligations, and associated risks.
- Contribute your environmental liability expertise to a range of projects and initiatives, helping shape best practices, tools, and processes within the Environmental Liability Management team.
The Skills That Set You Apart
- 5+ years of experience in environmental assessment and contaminated sites practice areas, ideally with exposure to both office-based analysis and field programs.
- Demonstrated experience preparing Site-Specific Liability Assessments (SSLA) and working with the AER Liability Management Framework for oil & gas assets.
- Proven cost estimating experience, including preparing estimates related to Provisions / Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO) for financial reporting and planning.
- Experience supporting due diligence for acquisitions and divestments of oil & gas properties, with an ability to translate environmental data into clear liability insights.
- A bachelor's degree or diploma in environmental science, earth sciences, engineering, or a related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- Strong data analysis skills using MS Excel, including managing large datasets and building transparent, auditable models.
- Eligibility for – or current – professional registration with a relevant organization (e.g., APEGA, EGBC, AIA, ASET) and a commitment to continued professional development.
