About Us

At Optimist, we build tools that shape industries from prototyping to production with a culture rooted in precision, performance, and practical innovation. Based in Calgary, we serve clients across sectors that keep the world moving by blending craftsmanship with smart engineering. Our team is small, skilled, and driven by the belief that better tools lead to better outcomes.

The Opportunity

We're looking for a Machinist Apprentice to join our growing shop. This role is ideal for someone early in their machining career with hands-on experience running CNC lathes and eager to continue developing their skills under the guidance of experienced machinists.

This is not a journeyman-level role. Instead, it's an opportunity to grow, learn, and build confidence while contributing to real, high-quality work in a supportive environment.

What You'll Do

  • Set up and operate CNC lathes (with support as needed) to produce precision components
  • Assist with manual machining tasks and secondary operations
  • Read and interpret basic blueprints, drawings, and work orders
  • Load programs, set tooling, and make minor offsets under supervision
  • Inspect parts using measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges
  • Support journeyman machinists with job setup, tooling, and workflow
  • Maintain machines, tools, and a clean, safe work area
  • Learn best practices for quality control, efficiency, and continuous improvement

Why Join Us

  • Competitive wage based on experience and qualifications
  • Consistent full-time hours with opportunities for bonus
  • Supportive, tight-knit shop environment where your skills make a visible impact
  • Exposure to advanced tooling, modern equipment, and diverse projects
  • Opportunities for professional growth and skill development

Additional information

  • Positions hours: 8:30am-4:30pm
  • Hours per week: 40
  • Schedule: Monday – Friday
  • Overtime: As required

  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
  • Reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious
  • Positive attitude and team-oriented mindset
