Role Overview 


The Kitchen Prep (also known as a Prep Cook or Kitchen Assistant) plays a crucial role in supporting kitchen operations by performing basic food preparation, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring the cooking team has the necessary ingredients and tools. This role helps streamline meal preparation and service efficiency. Though working behind the scenes, the Kitchen Prep contributes to the heart of the home by ensuring meals are made with care, helping to create a warm and welcoming dining experience for residents.


    Key Accountabilities 


  • Wash, peel, and cut fruits, vegetables, and other ingredients as needed.
  • Measure and portion ingredients accurately for cooking.
  • Prepare resident meals, salads, and garnishes with care, recognizing that food is an important part of residents' daily enjoyment.
  • Assist with assembling dishes and meal components that help create inviting, home-style meals.
  • Keep workstations clean, sanitized, and organized throughout shifts.
  • Cleaning and maintaining kitchen equipment daily
  • Properly dispose of waste, compost, and recycling.
  • Monitor and maintain kitchen inventory levels.
  • Assist in receiving and storing food deliveries.
  • Ensure food storage areas follow safety and hygiene guidelines.
  • Assist in setting up and breaking down kitchen stations.
  • Refill ingredients and supplies during meal service.
  • Inform Food service supervisor and cooks of any ingredient shortages.
  • Follow all health and safety protocols for food handling and storage.
  • Preparing and providing appropriate texture modified meals and dietary requirements so that all residents can enjoy meals that meet their specific needs.
  • Supporting meal time service to residents as required
  • Maintaining environmental public health standards and provincial standards for regulatory bodies
  • Participating in community committees and working groups to support community initiatives
  • Ensure the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary.

  • Required Education  


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Food Safety Handling Certificate (e.g., ServSafe or Food Safe). 

  • Required Skills & Experience 


  • 1-2 years of experience in a prep cook role in the food service industry
  • Previous kitchen experience in food handling or restaurant settings.
  • Basic knife skills and food preparation knowledge.
  • Ability to follow recipes and food safety guidelines.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.  

  • Additional Preferred Education and Skills  


  • Preference will be given to candidates with culinary training or coursework 
  • WHMIS certification for handling cleaning chemicals.
  • CPR or First Aid certification (preferred but not mandatory).
