General Description:

We are seeking a motivated and safety-conscious Engineering Co‑op Student who is eager to gain practical, hands-on experience in solid waste management operations. This role is ideal for a student interested in environmental, civil, or mechanical engineering and looking to develop real-world experience at active landfill sites, particularly in landfill operations, landfill gas collection systems, and environmental compliance.

The Engineering Co‑op Student will support landfill operations and the engineering team with field-based and office-based activities, including environmental monitoring, data collection, inspections, reporting, and engineering support related to landfill gas and leachate management systems. This role offers exposure to regulatory compliance, operational best practices, and engineering projects that contribute to environmental protection and greenhouse gas reduction.

Reporting to the Canadian Region Engineering Manager, the student will be based in Woodbridge, Ontario, with opportunities to travel to landfill and waste management facilities across Canada as part of the learning experience.

With guidance and mentorship from experienced engineers and operations staff, the Engineering Co op Student will:

  • Assist with environmental compliance inspections and site observations at landfill site and related facilities.
  • Support landfill operations staff with day-to-day operational and environmental tasks, including data collection and documentation.
  • Gain hands-on exposure to landfill gas collection systems, including well field components, piping, blowers, flares, and monitoring activities.
  • Assist with leachate management activities, such as monitoring systems, reviewing data, and supporting system maintenance or upgrades.
  • Participate in field work, including site visits, construction observations, and environmental monitoring activities.
  • Assist with the review and organization of monitoring reports, operational data, and inspection records.
  • Support the preparation of environmental permits, approval applications, and regulatory correspondence.
  • Help develop and update site operating plans when applicable, including safety, emergency response, stormwater, and spill prevention plans.
  • Shadow engineering consultations, cost estimates, and review of drawings or specifications, under supervision.
  • Maintain organize records, spreadsheets, and databases related to landfill operations and environmental performance.
  • Attend meetings with internal teams, consultants, and (when appropriate) regulatory agencies as a learning opportunity.
  • Support special projects related to landfill expansion, facilities improvement, and landfill gas production.
What We Need From You:
  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary Engineering or Applied Science program (Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, or related discipline)
  • Eligible for a co‑op or internship placement through an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Strong interest in environmental engineering, landfill operations, and waste management
  • Willingness to perform field-based work in outdoor and industrial environments
  • Ability to travel within Ontario and occasionally out of province (as required)
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and willingness to learn
  • Good interpersonal, communication, and basic technical writing skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with data analysis is an asset
  • Valid Provincial Driver's License (or ability to obtain one before starting)
  • Bilingual (English/French) is an asset but not required
  • Ability to successfully complete all pre-employment requirements
