Our Ideal Candidate
We are seeking an Intermediate Project Controller to join our dynamic consulting environment and support the successful delivery of multiple projects across diverse clients and sectors. This role is suited to an experienced project controls professional who can manage competing priorities, work with a high degree of independence, and exercise sound judgement in a fast-paced, multi-project setting.
You will partner closely with Project Managers, technical leads, and finance teams to provide accurate forecasting, insightful performance reporting, and disciplined cost and schedule control across a portfolio of active projects. In a consultancy environment, you will be expected to interpret contracts, translate client requirements into effective WBS structures, and provide meaningful analysis that supports decision-making and protects project margins.
This role involves hands-on responsibility for cost control, earned value management, scheduling, and change management, while also contributing to the continuous improvement of project controls tools, standards, and processes across the organization.
A Day in the Life
- Own financial tracking, forecasting, and variance analysis for a portfolio of assigned projects, ensuring accurate and timely visibility of project performance.
- Develop, maintain, and explain project forecasts, including Estimate at Completion (EAC), and clearly articulate drivers of forecast changes.
- Investigate root causes of cost and schedule variances across projects and provide actionable recommendations to mitigate risks, prevent write-offs, and protect
- Conduct regular reviews of time entries and cost allocations across projects, resolving discrepancies and reinforcing cost discipline.
- Proactively identify trends, scope changes, and emerging risks across active projects; maintain trend and change logs.
- Coordinate the preparation of change order documentation and ensure approved changes are accurately reflected in project budgets, schedules, and WBS structures.
- Support Project Managers in client communications related to change management, including substantiating cost and schedule impacts and following up on approvals.
- Lead the implementation and application of earned value management (EVM) on projects, including performance indices, variance analysis, and forecasting.
- Prepare clear internal and client-facing reports, dashboards, and performance summaries that translate complex data into actionable insights.
- Prepare variance narratives and performance summaries suitable for senior management and client review.
- Develop, maintain, and analyze project schedules for client-facing reporting across multiple projects, including progress updates and schedule variance analysis.
- Support resource loading and forecasting across active and proposed projects to optimize utilization and identify capacity constraints.
- Monitor actual resource usage against planned allocations and proactively flag risks, over-allocations, or under-utilization.
- Manage competing priorities across multiple projects and clients while maintaining accuracy, consistency, and responsiveness.
- Provide independent analysis and professional challenge to Project Managers to support sound decision-making across the project portfolio.
- Identify cross-project trends and systemic issues and escalate risks or opportunities as appropriate.
- Contribute to the setup, refinement, and consistent application of project controls tools, processes, and standards across the organization.
- Support mentoring and knowledge sharing with junior project controls staff.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance reporting quality, forecasting accuracy, and operational efficiency.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Post-secondary education in Project Management, Business, Finance, Engineering, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of progressive experience in project controls, preferably within a consulting or professional services environment managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Demonstrated experience supporting multiple Project Managers and clients across concurrent projects.
- Experience working with time-based, cost-reimbursable, lump-sum, or mixed contract structures.
- Strong understanding of contract interpretation, WBS development, forecasting, and client reporting requirements.
- Proficiency with ERP systems (BST10 experience preferred).
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including financial analysis and reporting.
- Working knowledge of earned value management (EVM), cost control, and forecasting techniques.
- 1–3 years of hands-on experience with scheduling software (e.g., Primavera P6, Microsoft Project) supporting client reporting. Primavera P6 is an asset.
- PMP or CAPM certification is an asset.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence without formal authority.
- Comfortable engaging in respectful but firm conversations to ensure financial, contractual, and schedule integrity.
- Demonstrates initiative, accountability, and the ability to operate with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
