Our client, Helen's Acres Community Farm, is a 24‑acre farm located in the heart of Kelowna, BC. Operated by the Trinity Legacy Foundation, the farm plays a vital role in improving food security across the Central Okanagan. In partnership with local social agencies, they supply fresh, nutritious food to individuals and families facing food insecurity. Their work is rooted in community, stewardship, and the belief that everyone deserves access to healthy food.
Position Overview
They are currently seeking a dedicated and skilled Farm Manager to lead the full crop production cycle at Helen's Acres Community Farm in Kelowna, BC. This is a seasonal, full-time role (37.5 hours per week) from March 1 to October 31 . The position oversees all aspects of crop planning and harvesting, land stewardship, greenhouse operations, and the coordination of employees and volunteers. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Farm Manager plays a key leadership role in ensuring the farm's productivity, sustainability, and community impact.
Working Conditions
This position requires flexibility based on crop and seasonal needs, including early morning start times during the summer. Outdoor work is performed in all weather conditions, with access to an indoor office space for administrative duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and oversee day‑to‑day land stewardship, sustainability practices, and crop activities.
- Collaborate with the Farm Ambassador to develop and implement the annual crop production plan.
- Lead greenhouse operations and support crop production alongside employees and volunteers.
- Identify supply needs and coordinate procurement for all farm operations.
- Supervise maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, irrigation systems, and greenhouse infrastructure.
- Train and support volunteers in tasks such as seed propagation, planting, weeding, harvesting, weighing, and sorting.
- Provide basic agricultural training to summer employees and partner organizations (e.g., Agriculture in the Classroom).
- Assign tasks to seasonal employees to ensure alignment with farm goals and production timelines.
- Provide progress updates and recommendations to support volunteer coordination and scheduling.
Requirements
- Knowledge of commercial crop production, with experience in vegetable and small fruit production considered an asset.
- Understanding of land management, sustainability practices, and organic and modern horticultural techniques.
- Ability to safely and efficiently operate tractors, small farm equipment, field implements, and tools in accordance with WorkSafeBC regulations and provincial guidelines.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize in a dynamic farm environment.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills when working with clients, employees, and volunteers.
- A team-oriented approach aligned with Helen's Acres' commitment to an inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license.
Assets for Success
- Diploma or degree in agriculture or food production, or equivalent experience (approximately three years).
- Experience delegating tasks and providing training to volunteers and students in line with provincial volunteer/work guidelines.
- One to two years of experience with overhead or drip irrigation systems.
- Greenhouse production experience.
This seasonal, full-time position offers a monthly compensation range of $4,800–$5,800, based on experience.
