Position: Communications Summer Student Start Date: May 4, Employment Status: Summer Student (up to 16 weeks Reporting To: Communications Officer Union Affiliation: Non-union Posting Date: February 3, Closing Date February 24, 2026 at 4:30 pm Contract Duration: May 4, 2026 – September 4, Position Summary: Perth County is recruiting for a Communications Summer Student to assist assists in supporting communication initiatives to promote transparency, community engagement, and public awareness of the County's programs and services. Reporting to the Communications Officer, the student will help develop and share content across various platforms, including Perth County's website, social media channels and the development of print materials.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Generates content for social media and writes engaging captions for posts and reels
  • Write, proofread and edit engaging material for print, web and social media
  • Ensure all communications materials adhere to corporate brand guidelines, maintaining consistency in tone and style
  • Create and edit graphic files using photo editing software
  • Review and enhance web content including the development of SEO information
  • Review social media and website material and support media monitoring activities
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop messaging and plan communication campaigns to promote public education of County programs and initiatives
  • Assist with the development of written materials including reports, media releases and council highlights
  • Assist with the development and planning of the annual communication calendar
  • Develop and maintain an up-to-date catalogue of social media advertisements, including tracking active campaigns, creative assets and performance metrics
  • Create and format accessible content in compliance with AODA requirements, ensuring all digital and print materials meet accessibility standards
  • Conduct research and benchmarking to support the development and review of internal corporate policies, identifying best practices and comparable approaches
  • Ensure that Occupational Health and Safety practices and County of Perth policies and procedures are adhered to; wear any personal protective equipment required to ensure personal safety and report any known hazards and/or incidents in the workplace to immediate Supervisor
  • Other responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Post Secondary student pursuing an education in Communications or similar field of study
  • Strong organizational skills that demonstrate attention to detail and multi-tasking
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Previous graphic design experience with experience using Canva
  • Experience publishing on a variety of print, digital, email and social media platforms
  • Experience in developing social media content for Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube and LinkedIn
  • Familiarity with Accessibility for Ontarian's with Disabilities Act (AODA) accessibility standards and best practices
  • Knowledge in communications, marketing and social media trends
  • Experience working in a deadline-driven environment
  • Attention to detail with strong proofreading experience
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to build positive working relationships and collaborate effectively across teams
Shift: Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (35 hours per week)
Hourly Rate: $18.73
