Job Description Summary About GE Aerospace Are you ready to see your future take flight? At GE Aerospace, we are transforming aviation technologies for today and tomorrow. Your contributions will be pivotal in the creation of advanced jet engines, components, and integrated systems that drive commercial and military aircraft. Join a team that values your passion, curiosity, and unique perspectives, and share in a mission that impacts millions worldwide! About this Position The Emerging Technologies (ET) team, which encompasses Small Uncrewed Engines (SUE), Hypersonics, and AI innovations for Defense and Systems, is looking for a talented Combustor Design Module Lead. In this fast-paced role, you will own the combustor module's architecture and design for limited-life propulsion engines, guiding the module from initial concept through to qualification. This position entails leading cross-functional teams to deliver combustor designs that are safe, high-quality, timely, and cost-effective, aligned with mission objectives. Key Responsibilities Module Ownership (Concept to Qualification) : Drive combustor architecture and manage requirements from concept through preliminary and detailed design to rig and engine qualification. Combustor Design & Analysis : Define critical parameters such as liner/dome/swirler geometry and conduct thorough analyses on fuel nozzle integration, emissions, flame stability, and life-limited features. Thermal & Structural Integrity : Oversee thermal management strategies, stress assessments, and compliance with limited-life retirement rules to ensure durability and reliability. Fuel & Controls Integration : Collaborate with fuel system and controls teams on essential aspects like transient operability and nozzle selection. Manufacturability & Materials : Spearhead design for manufacturability and select appropriate materials to optimize combustor component production. Testing & Qualification : Design and supervise rig and engine tests, analyze results, and compile evidence to ensure robust qualification. Integration & V&V : Lead failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA), requirements traceability, and hazard evaluations to ensure seamless integration with other engine components. Program Execution : Develop and manage project schedules and risks, ensuring resources are effectively coordinated and aligned with program objectives. Leadership & Mentoring : Provide technical guidance, set clear objectives for team members, review designs, and mentor junior engineers while fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Compliance & Documentation : Maintain rigorous configuration control and ensure all designs meet applicable standards and regulations. Required Qualifications Education/Experience : Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering (Master’s preferred) and at least 5 years of experience in combustor design for gas turbine or small propulsion systems, including a proven track record from concept to qualification. Technical Depth : Strong expertise in combustor aerothermal design, emissions regulations, and lifecycle management strategies. Leadership & Communication : Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, engage suppliers, and communicate effectively about decisions and risks. Legal Authorization : Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for visa sponsorship. Desired Characteristics: Technical Tools : Proficiency in CAD/PLM, aerothermal/CFD tools, and FEA for thermo-mechanical analysis. 10 years of experience managing combustor modules. Success Metrics (SQDC) Safety : Conduct thorough hazard analyses and maintain validated ignition and thermal protection margins. Quality : Achieve first-time-right design reviews and correlate test data with predictions successfully. Delivery : Ensure timely completion of design milestones and readiness for testing. Cost : Meet design-to-cost objectives through effective optimization strategies. Role Interfaces Internal : Work with teams across compressor and turbine design, fuel and controls, manufacturing, and testing to ensure robust collaboration. External : Engage with suppliers and external stakeholders to ensure mission alignment. Why Join Us Impactful Ownership : Lead a core propulsion module from concept to qualification within dynamic engine programs. Cross-Site Leadership : Gain extensive experience working with teams across multiple locations. Grow and Mentor : Contribute to the growth of future engineering talent and drive continuous improvements in a high-performance environment. This role entails access to U.S. export-controlled information. Employment is contingent upon meeting the criteria as a U.S. Person. Additional Information GE Aerospace fosters an encouraging work environment, with opportunities for professional growth and competitive compensation.
