Nordson Test & Inspection , a global leader in world-class metrology equipment and inspection systems, is seeking a highly motivated and talented Software Engineer to join our team in Colchester UK . We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace, and we are looking for candidates who share that same commitment.

Summary of the role

As a member of the Manual X-ray Inspection (MXI) system software team, you will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, where your ideas and contributions will be valued and respected.

The MXI software development team is always adding new functionality and is also involved with software maintenance activities, the activities never stop.

In our software development team, we can offer you the possibility to start with regular software activities and gain more responsibility as your knowledge and skill set grows. The software engineer will be involved in the complete development life cycle from gathering and analysing the requirements through to playing a key role in releasing the completed functionality. There are also continuous improvement tasks to optimise the performance of the system, Everybody can work across all of the functionality of the system or specialise in specific areas of the system based on their skills and areas of interest.

The main application software is written in standard and multi-threaded C++ with some CUDA for processing. The QT framework is used for the GUI. The software is performance critical as it is a real-time processing system that must respond to user input with minimal lag. The main purpose of the software is to capture x-ray images of electronic components to analyse for any defects in material or manufacturing that would cause failures in the final products. There is a heavy reliance on image processing techniques and increasingly AI to automate measurements and pass/fail decisions.

In addition to the main application software the team is also responsible for modules that control and interact with several different hardware systems including:

Controlling the motion control module to allow the user to seamlessly move the samples being inspected.

Grabbing and processing images from the x-ray camera to provide the best images for displaying and analysing

Controlling the x-ray generation system to generate the best images for the current samples being inspected

Role and Responsibilities

We are looking for a C++ software developer to develop and maintain machine control software for our Manual X-ray Inspection product line. To learn and to get to know what the system does, learn how it controls the X-ray system and to understand the products that are inspected by the system. You will change the way the machine does things.

Develop an understanding of how MXI systems operate and what they are expected to do.

Develop software primarily in C++ based on customer requirements

Analyze problem reports from the field and identify solutions

Provide support to our customer support and production engineering teams

Skills and Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in an engineering or science based subject is preferred although strong professional experience using C++ will also be considered.

Experience programming using C++ preferably in a windows environment using the Microsoft toolset. Visual Studio 2019 or later.

Good communication skills.

Travel

Some travel to other Nordson sites, customer sites and trade shows might be required. This is national and international travel. No more than 2-3 weeks per year would be expected.

Benefits

We offer a flexible work schedule, a comprehensive benefits package, and opportunities for growth and development. Our benefits do further include: 25 days paid holiday in addition to UK national holidays, private healthcare, company pension scheme on successful completion of the probationary period.
