The New Mexico Department of Transportation provides a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public, while promoting economic development and preserving the environment of New Mexico. The IT Infrastructure unit supports all enterprise data center operations to support the agencies critical infrastructure, and improvement projects, while maintaining a high level of security controls to protect the agency data and constituents of the state of New Mexico transportation needs.
Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two (2) weeks of the closing date.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrate leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
This position is required to follow a standard onsite schedule of 5 days a week, Monday through Friday. Remote or alternate worksite options are not available for this role.
Why does the job exist?
This position exists to ensure that NMDOT's network infrastructure operates reliably, securely, and efficiently. As networks grow more complex and mission critical, NMDOT needs a dedicated leader who can: Oversee daily network operations so systems remain stable and downtime is minimized. Coordinate and guide technical staff, ensuring work is completed correctly, safely, and on schedule. Maintain and improve network performance, proactively identifying issues and implementing solutions. Support business continuity, ensuring employees, customers, and systems can communicate without interruption. Implement standards, policies, and best practices that keep the network secure and compliant. Plan for future growth, including upgrades, capacity planning, and technology improvements. Act as an escalation point for complex technical problems that require experienced oversight.
How does it get done?
1. Ensure Network Reliability and Performance Maintain a highly reliable network infrastructure and ensure consistent service quality. Monitor network performance, identify issues, and minimize downtime. 2. Supervise and Develop Network Staff Lead, train, and support Network Technicians and Administrators. Oversee daily operations, assign tasks, and ensure strong communication and professionalism within the team. 3. Oversee Installation, Maintenance, and Troubleshooting Direct installation, maintenance, and repair of network equipment and customer access platforms. Replace failed hardware and manage software upgrades on network elements. 4. Manage Core Network Systems Ensure network hardware, software, and security systems meet performance objectives. 5. Enforce Policies, Standards, and Compliance Implement and enforce policies and procedures to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. Maintain documentation, metrics, and reports for upper management. 6. Collaborate Across Departments Work with other departments to ensure their network needs are met and that service levels remain high. Participate in planning for network upgrades, expansions, and long-term infrastructure improvements. 7. Customer Service and Issue Escalation Ensure excellent customer service by overseeing ticket resolution and acting as an escalation point for complex issues.

The Network Operations Team Technicians and administrators depend on the supervisor for guidance, direction, training, and escalation support. 4. Customers or End Users Whether internal or external, users benefit from reliable connectivity, fast issue resolution, and consistent service quality. 5. Senior Leadership Executives rely on the Network Supervisor to maintain uptime, manage risks, provide accurate reporting, and support strategic technology planning.
Ideal Candidate
A strong leader with deep expertise in network administration and security, skilled in managing complex infrastructures and guiding technical teams. They are proactive, detail-oriented, and adept at troubleshooting, ensuring high network availability and compliance. Excellent communication and vendor management skills are essential, along with the ability to align technology solutions with business goals. Technical abilities include securing network segmentation based on business needs, ensuring security is priority and vulnerabilities can be mitigated and patched, as well as strong internal controls.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, Engineering, or similar technical degree and four (4) years of experience in network administration and design. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, reaching, and ability to lift 50 pounds may be required. As well as occasional travel to remote locations.
