About The Role
The Senior Data Scientist at Intermountain Healthcare plays a pivotal role in utilizing industry-leading advanced analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to support the organization's mission. This remote position involves developing innovative data science tools and models that generate strategic insights, optimize healthcare delivery, and improve patient outcomes. The incumbent will be part of an in-house cohort development team, enhancing autonomy and strategic alignment while reducing vendor risks and costs. The role requires applying sophisticated statistical techniques, programming expertise, and data manipulation skills to large and complex datasets, including unstructured data sources. The Senior Data Scientist will work Monday through Friday during regular business hours, collaborating across teams to drive data-driven decision-making and operational improvements within the healthcare setting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in statistics, data science, applied mathematics, computer science, information systems, or related field, with a minimum of four years of relevant experience; or Master's Degree with at least two years of experience.
  • Proficiency in statistical and machine learning modeling techniques such as generalized linear models, tree-based classification, network analysis, simulation modeling, natural language processing, and other structured/unstructured analytical methods.
  • Experience developing custom machine learning algorithms and models.
  • Strong programming skills in R, Python, SQL, Spark, Matlab, or similar languages.
  • Understanding of data science systems, applications, and architecture.
  • Experience working with large, complex, and unstructured datasets, including data manipulation, integration, and analysis.
  • Proven ability to lead and contribute to advanced analytic projects from inception through deployment and workflow integration.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of translating technical insights into actionable business recommendations through data visualization and reports.
  • Experience fostering collaborative relationships across organizational levels.
  • Knowledge of Big Data technologies such as Hadoop, Hive, NoSQL, and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure is preferred.
  • Healthcare or insurance industry experience, especially with longitudinal patient cohorts, is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative data science tools, models, and methodologies that deliver strategic insights and generate measurable return on investment.
  • Prepare and clean data from diverse sources, including data mining and feature engineering within large datasets with complex classes and anomalies.
  • Apply advanced statistical techniques to interpret model results accurately and effectively, ensuring clear and actionable outcomes.
  • Utilize statistical programming languages and tools to create, validate, and operationalize models and analytic products.
  • Design and implement custom algorithms and machine learning models to address specific organizational needs.
  • Automate data workflows and analytic processes through scripting, API integration, and software utility development.
  • Stay current with cutting-edge analytic methodologies and tools, creatively applying them to solve complex healthcare problems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Communicate findings through data visualizations, reports, presentations, and interpersonal interactions to influence decision-making.
  • Lead and participate in projects from conceptualization to deployment, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and strategies.
