We are currently seeking an experienced Controller to join our Finance Department in Traverse City, MI and support the organization's financial stability and mission-driven work.
About the RoleThe Controller plays a key leadership role in overseeing NMHSI's financial management systems and daily financial operations. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this position supports and supervises finance department staff while performing and overseeing core accounting functions including general ledger activity, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, audits, and grant management.
This role is integral to ensuring strong internal controls, accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and sound fiscal stewardship within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) environment.

- Oversee daily financial operations, including cash flow, expenditures, and general accounting functions
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes, balance sheet reconciliations, and journal entries
- Develop, document, and maintain accounting policies and internal control procedures
- Assist with preparation and oversight of the annual operating budget and program-specific budgets
- Support grant management across multiple funding sources, including required financial reporting
- Assist with preparation for annual audits and ensure accurate documentation and compliance
- Prepare monthly financial reports and analyses for the CFO and CEO
- Supervise, train, and evaluate finance department staff
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements, including HRSA, UDS, IRS, Medicaid, and Medicare filings
- Maintain oversight of agency assets, capitalization, and depreciation in accordance with federal guidelines
- Identify financial trends and communicate risks or concerns to leadership
- Participate in quality improvement and organizational committees as needed
