Please note: The salary range above represents this position's earning potential. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $62,824 to $107,358, based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

WHO WE ARE

The mission of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is to move people and connect places with seamless, equitable transportation options that are safe, environmentally responsible, and support economic growth and vibrancy in Montgomery County. The Department has five divisions; these include Highway Services, Parking Management, Transit Services, Traffic Engineering and Operations, and Transportation Engineering. We are a large organization with over 1,200 employees and a dedicated County budget of $300 million.

The Division of Transit Services coordinates transit services in Montgomery County. Transit accomplishes an essential mobility mission of the County, connecting people, communities, workplaces, educational institutions, recreational opportunities, and many other essential destinations. The Division employs 850+ people, operates nearly 400 buses on 80+ fixed routes throughout Montgomery County. The Division plans, schedules, and manages the County's Ride On bus system, consisting of County-owned and operated buses. Ride On carries roughly 18 million riders annually.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Transit Services is seeking Transit Coordinators (Download PDF reader) who are responsible for monitoring, coordinating, directing, and reporting on a portion of the County Government's public transit bus service, including initiating short-term corrective actions to maintain delivery of safe, timely, and efficient transit service throughout a large geographical area of Montgomery County.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills to provide clear direction to Bus Operators and exceptional customer service to the riding public, backed by solid knowledge of Ride On operating procedures, County geography, routes, and transit communications and dispatch systems. This candidate maintains a consistent focus on safety while addressing accidents, incidents, disruptive passengers, and adverse road or weather conditions, and uses excellent problem-solving skills to quickly assess service disruptions and implement short-term corrective actions that keep service running smoothly. The candidate also brings a positive attitude, works effectively with staff at all levels, and provides confident lead direction in both road and desk coordinator roles.

What You'll Be Doing

The Transit Coordinator plays a critical role in advancing MCDOT/Transit Services' mission by providing frontline operational support to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient bus service that prioritizes safety, customer service, and effective coordination across the Ride On network.

  • Provide oversight of more than 285 buses operating across hundreds of miles of roadway by monitoring service at key points along routes to help ensure safe, on-time service delivery, demonstrating strong communication skills and excellent customer service.
  • Assign buses to Bus Operators daily and deploys relief/stand-by Operators to open runs due to absences, tardiness, or other issues to ensure all scheduled service is covered.
  • Work closely with Transit Bus Operators to receive and act on reports regarding vehicle condition, breakdowns, crashes, traffic delays, road conditions, and other factors affecting on-time service delivery.
  • Investigate and documents vehicle crashes, passenger/pedestrian injuries, disruptive patrons, adverse road conditions, obstructions, and other hazards that impede traffic, and respond to unusual situations requiring unplanned bus movements for large groups, including emergencies.
  • Intervene in customer–operator disputes and provides direct, one-on-one assistance to the riding public on buses, at crash scenes, and at bus stops, pick-up/drop-off locations, layover points, and terminals, modeling excellent customer service.
  • Conduct on-site crash and personal injury investigations; prepares clear, detailed reports and provides testimony as required for internal reviews or legal proceedings.
  • Operate a transit bus under unusual or emergency circumstances to ensure all runs are covered, including driving vehicles designated as "out of service" when needed to protect service.
  • Use radio and computer/laptop/tablet technology to maintain real-time communication with Central Communications, complete reports, perform WiFi checks, enter data, generate absence and overtime reports, and obtain directions for programmed transportation runs and other operational needs.
  • Monitor Bus Operator performance in the field and at sign in, including adherence to safety rules, customer service expectations, route and schedule compliance, and uniform/appearance standards, and documents both violations and commendable actions.
  • Support training and coaching of Bus Operators by providing route familiarization, guidance on safe operating practices, and feedback on service performance to reinforce a strong safety and customer-focused culture.
  • Coordinate with Central Communications, maintenance, and emergency services to remove unsafe vehicles from service, arrange change offs, implement detours, and restore normal operations as quickly and safely as possible.
  • Participate in special or programmed transportation services, providing maps and directions, and ensuring service is delivered safely, on time, and in with established procedures.

The individual selected for this position will be considered an "Essential Employee." Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency of liberal leave.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a Transit Bus Operator.

Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.

Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

License: At appointment/placement in the class, a Transit Coordinator must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements from the incumbent's state of residence in order to drive a Transit Bus during emergencies and for training and demonstrations; the license must be maintained.

Other: Applicants must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age on the first day of employment in this job class.
