Job Title: Student Success Coach (Elementary Schools)
Reports to: Program Supervisor
Compensation: $21.00 / hour
Work Schedule: In Person, On Site ~28 hours per week
Program Summary:
BLAST empowers at-promise students to build a positive vision for their future, supporting academic success, personal growth, and post-secondary readiness. Through classroom-based life skills lessons, one-on-one mentoring, and enrichment services, the program encourages students to set and reach meaningful goals.
Position Summary:
Student Success Coaches play an important role in delivering services at assigned school sites. They support students through classroom instruction, individual guidance, and events that connect youth with college, career, and personal development opportunities.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Life Skills Coaching & Student Engagement
- Deliver life skills workshops using provided lesson plans, presentations, and interactive activities.
- Maintain a positive, inclusive, and structured classroom environment.
- Create and communicate classroom expectations that promote respect, safety, and engagement.
- Provide consistent feedback on student work and track progress.
- Develop a class schedule aligned with the school calendar.
Student Success Support
- Help program participants set and make progress towards an academic or personal goal.
- Provide individualized support to help students explore and navigate post-secondary pathways, including college, certificate programs, employment, and military options.
- Facilitate student and family workshops and activities on topics such as future thinking, personal well-being, goal setting, and growth mindset.
- Ensure every 5th grader feels prepared for their transition to middle school.
- Coordinate guest speakers, workshops, and field trips based on student interests and our college and career readiness efforts.
- Refer students to additional resources or support services as needed.
Communication & Relationship Building
- Maintain regular contact with students and families via phone, text, and/or email.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with school staff, administrators, community partners, and families.
- Help promote program activities through flyers, social media posts, and outreach materials.
Data & Program Documentation
- Collect and manage student permission forms and documentation.
- Track participation, service delivery, and outcomes using digital tools and spreadsheets.
- Administer surveys (welcome, wrap-up, retrospective) and report results.
General Program Support
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of job market trends and employer needs.
- Contribute to the planning and continuous improvement of program services.
- Attend school and staff meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions.
- Follow all school and organization policies and procedures.
- Complete administrative tasks such as data entry, copies, and emails.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience
- College education or equivalent experience demonstrating the ability to meet the role's demands.
- Experience working with youth (paid or volunteer); youth development and academic enrichment experience preferred.
- Experience working in multicultural environments preferred.
Skills and/or Abilities and Personal Characteristics:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (preferred) – Effective oral and written communication skills, and public speaking skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills.
- Personal qualities that include integrity, commitment to Long Beach BLAST's mission, respect for diversity, and the ability to inspire and motivate.
- Strong computer skills - Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom and Google Suite applications.
- Ability to work effectively as a team member.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Schedule: Part-time working up to 28 hours per week during predetermined days.
Paid Time Off- Vacation & Sick Pay
In accordance with company policy, part-time employees are not eligible for paid vacation; however, you may take vacation time off without pay with prior written approval of your immediate supervisor. In accordance with company policy, part-time employees will accrue one hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked up to a maximum accrual of 48 hours or six days, whichever is greater, per fiscal year.
Paid holidays include: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Winter Break.
Status: Part-time, Non-Exempt
Compensation: $21.00 / hour
Environmental Conditions
Classroom and office environment; exposure to computer screens, noise and electrical energy; extensive contact with staff, faculty, partners, and students, as well as donors and potential donors.
Physical Conditions
Essential functions require maintaining the physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
