Overview

The Instructor/Lifeguards work as part of team of aquatic staff responsible for the safety of patrons in the aquatic facilities and the successful delivery of daily programs and activities as well as completion of regular maintenance tasks.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Performs lifeguarding duties and participate in responses to aquatic emergencies.
  • Teaches swimming lessons to a variety of ages and skill levels.
  • Performs routine tasks associated with daily maintenance of the pool, deck and change rooms.
  • Responds to clients' inquiries, concerns, and complaints.
  • Assists the Instructor/Lifeguard 2 as required on-deck or with administrative tasks.
  • Prepares and maintains work records.
  • Instructor/Lifeguard 1s may orient and mentor Junior Instructor/Lifeguards.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to the work.
  • Ability to demonstrate competence in established procedures and related training.
  • Ability to respond to minor and major first aid and lifesaving situations in aquatic facilities.
  • Ability to teach water safety and aquatic skills to patrons ranging in age and abilities and provide effective in-class feedback and written reports.)
  • Working knowledge of pool chemistry and maintenance equipment and procedures.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to be courteous to others in situations of conflict or disagreement.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to prevent and address infractions of pool rules and regulations with professionalism.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of charts, records and reports related to the work. 
  • Ability to successfully pass a Police Information Check.
Qualifications and Experience:

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent supplemented by a minimum of 500 hours of related lifeguarding experience and courses in lifesaving, aquatic skills, instruction and pool operations and maintenance as required for the certifications listed below.


•    National Lifeguard Pool Option current within two (2) years
•    National Lifeguard Waterpark Option current within two (2) years
•    Standard First Aid and CPR-C/AED current within three (3) years
•    Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor current within two (2) years
•    Lifesaving Instructor current within two (2) years

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an environment with exposure to pool chemicals. Periods of heavy physical lifting and exertion are required, including lifesaving activities. Periods of visual effort and mental concentration are required to scan pool and surrounding areas for safety. Instructor/Lifeguards respond to concerned patrons or people in crisis.
These positions have set core hours and days. However, it is on a flexible-blocking schedule. This could include seasonal change in location based on operational needs and availability of other flex positions. Hour adjustments can be an be flexed by one hour on either end of the shift for operational needs.

Of the 14 Regular Part-Time Instructor/Lifeguard 1 positions, 7 are currently vacant. Filling these positions may create domino vacancies. As such, any Instructor/Lifeguard 1 vacancies that arise during the recruitment process will be filled based on the outcome of this competition. Each position has a set core number of hours, days, and times, but can be flexed based on operational needs.
