The Diocese of Corpus Christi is seeking a Student Intern for the Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi campus. Student interns assist the Chaplain and the Newman Catholic Student Center Staff ("the Newman Center") as needed in their responsibilities of caring for the facilities, creating a welcoming environment, organizing and participating in community events, and leading a life worthy of imitation as a practicing Catholic.

Ministerial Character:

The Diocesan Bishop is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the particular Church ("the Diocese") entrusted to him. In a unique and visible way, he makes Christ's mission present and enduring as the Shepherd of the Christian Community. In order to fulfill his mission, the Diocesan Bishop employs suitable, chosen collaborators, who are clerics, religious, and lay people. He shares with them the apostolic mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.

Each position employed in the Diocese of Corpus Christi helps to extend the ministry of the Diocesan Bishop in particular ways as outlined in the job duties and responsibilities. Therefore, the Director of Construction and Property is closely connected to and assists the Diocesan Bishop in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the church.

Areas of Responsibility:

The list below reflects the general details considered necessary to describe the primary functions of the job identified and shall not be construed as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the job.

  • As an integral part of your ministry for the Church as carried out in this position, support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of the Diocese of Corpus Christi in both your professional and personal life.
  • Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Continuously grow in your ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed.
  • Assists the Chaplain and Newman Center Staff with the planning, preparation, carrying out, and presence at Tuesday lunches, orientation and welcome week, graduation luncheons, and other social gatherings, including cooking meals.
  • Assists with the planning, preparation, carrying out, and presence at pilgrimages, retreats, service projects, Theology on Tap, and social gatherings that are sponsored by the Newman Center or Islander Catholic, the student organization of TAMUCC.
  • Promotes the Newman Center by establishing key relationships and resources in the community, on campus, and in the local parishes.
  • Functions as a sacristan for weekday and Sunday liturgies.
  • Assists with promotion and outreach within the community.
  • Designs and implements the promotion of events through the website and social media.
  • Assists in recruiting and leading volunteers, teammates, and students.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the facilities, including the Newman Center and Chapel, and is responsible for closing the Newman Center in the evenings.
  • Answers the telephone and relays messages.
  • Assists the Chaplain and Newman Center Staff in creating a calendar of activities for campus ministry.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Position Information:

  • Reports to the Newman Center Chaplain and/or his delegate
  • Part-time hourly Non-Exempt; flexible schedules including weekends, especially Sundays
  • Certification in Safe Environment training provided by the Office for Safe Environment and Child & Family Resources is required
  • Food Handler's License with the State of Texas is required

Mental/Physical Demands:

  • Lifting of 10 pounds or more
  • Ability to maintain composure under duress

Qualifications:

  • A love for God, His Church, His people, and an enjoyment and willingness to serve them from an administrative standpoint, particularly college-aged students.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and behavior with an ability to set appropriate boundaries with students and teammates under the guidelines listed in the Creating and Maintaining a Safe Environment document regarding ethics and integrity in ministry in the Diocese of Corpus Christi.
  • Ability to discern personal daily tasks.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team-oriented manner in all interactions.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Honest, trustworthy, organized, self-motivated, and creative.
  • Ability to work on a variety of tasks in a short amount of time.
  • Ability to learn a variety of skills and tasks quickly, such as working the sound system or setting up for Mass.
  • Ability to adapt to change, be open to new ideas, take on new responsibilities, handle pressure, and adjust plans to meet changing needs.
  • Competency with social media including but not limited to Canva, Facebook, and Instagram.
  • Competency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher.
  • Competency in database entry.
  • Ability to cook and a willingness to learn how to cook a variety of meals.

Organization Improvement and Morale:

  • Demonstrates a professional attitude as a member of Diocesan staff.
  • Maintains confidentiality in matters of the Diocese and Newman Center.
  • Serves as a representative of the Diocese displaying courtesy, tact, positivity, and discretion in all interactions with colleagues and community served.
  • Carries out commitments made to Diocesan colleagues and the community served.
  • Employs professional ethics in relationships with Diocesan colleagues and the community served.
  • Positively contributes to the overall mission and values of the Newman Center to promote a positive organizational culture.

Additional Requirements:

  • Submit to employment required screenings including criminal history background check, motor vehicle record check, and drug screening
  • Certification in Safe Environment training provided by the Office of Safe Environment and Child & Family Resources
  • Position requires adherence to diocesan policies and procedures
