Our organization

The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

The Enforcement division enforces Alberta securities laws by investigating and prosecuting breaches of those laws with a view to stopping current misconduct and preventing future misconduct.

The opportunity

The Summer Law Student will assist the Enforcement division with research and writing on various topics that are relevant to the division, as well as assisting ASC staff on Enforcement files. The student will work primarily with the litigation team and be required to use a variety of skills, including:

  • communicating orally and in writing, including preparing legal memoranda and helping prepare written submissions;
  • managing assigned research projects, including reporting on their progress and ensuring they are done on time; and
  • collaborating with the litigation team, including brainstorming and strategizing.
Key responsibilities include
  • Researching and writing pertaining to investigations and litigation files, as well as general policy projects emanating from the Office of the Director, Enforcement;
  • Assisting with file tasks and procedures such as:
    • Reviewing files to summarize evidence, including testimony;
    • Preparing the initial draft of notices of hearing, submissions, and other documents;
  • Assisting with preparations for hearings, court proceedings, trials and appeals;
  • Other duties as required.
The ideal candidate will possess
  • Be enrolled in a JD program;
  • Have an interest in administrative, regulatory or securities law, and/or litigation;
  • Have an interest in the capital markets and the public interest;
  • Have general work experience in an environment where professionalism, confidentiality, problem solving and flexibility are required;
  • Demonstrate strong research and writing skills;
  • Be detail-oriented, with excellent interpersonal skills and a customer-focused attitude;
  • Have proven intermediate computer skills (Excel, Word, etc.).

Note: The successful candidate will be required to provide a Police Information Check with results satisfactory to the ASC prior to commencement of employment.
