Description

Coordinate the Sioux City Public Museum's youth-oriented educational programming and assist with other programs that will promote the Museum's commitment to providing educational opportunities. Duties will include scheduling and coordinating youth group tours, organizing and directing programming, class offerings, special events and outreach programs; ordering educational supplies; assisting with the training of volunteers and other duties as assigned. Graduation from a four-year college in related field preferred with some work experience in a position coordinating similar educational programs.

Although this is not a full-time position, the position is eligible for our great pension plan through Iowa Public Employees Retirement System (IPERS)

Permanent part-time position (20 hours per week). Tuesday through Friday with some weekends and occasional evenings expected.

Our employees are required to reside within (30) thirty miles of the City of Sioux City, city limits which extends to the adjoining states of Nebraska and South Dakota.

Duties
  • Works with instructors and seasonal employees to develop, implement and coordinate class offerings, programming, and track equipment and supplies.
  • Creates class descriptions and works with Publication Coordinator or Communications Director to develop promotional publications and related materials for educational programming.
  • Works with instructors and visiting artists to identify supplies, special equipment and costs for special projects such as murals.
  • Hires, evaluates and trains instructors. Assists the Curator in training docents, volunteers and maintains positive volunteer relationships.
  • Directs classroom programs, organizes annual projects, and assists in the development of special events.
  • Assists other staff in promoting the Department's mission through programming and other activities.
  • Coordinates and schedules tours for special groups including schools, families, etc.
  • Oversees and inspects the Hands-On Gallery and individual learning stations.
  • Maintains inventory and assists with ordering of educational supplies.
  • Compiles and distributes information from guest surveys of classes and programs.
  • Provides customer service via in-person, telephone, e-mail and/or other means available.
  • Assists on a limited scale with fund-raising efforts.
  • Maintaining work hours as well as regular, punctual attendance is required.
  • Performs other related duties and tasks as assigned.
  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared
  • emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.
Qualifications

Cognitive Demands, Skills and Abilities: Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you, ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer), ability to see details at a distance, ability to identify and understand the speech of another person, ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

Job Knowledge: Good knowledge of art, an interest art education and the willingness to share that knowledge. The ability to organize youth and adult programs and arouse interest in art and Department related programs.
Good knowledge of the theory and practices of the art programs, education, processes and studio practice. Good knowledge of techniques of data gathering, interpretation, interviewing; ability to gather and analyze facts objectively, draw logical conclusions and propose practical solutions to problems; ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks including software programs such as Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, etc.; ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines; ability to interpret and apply pertinent, policies and procedures; ability to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely fashion with proper attention to detail.

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to customers (external and internal). Requires the ability to write and speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees and patrons; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; to provide and follow verbal and written instructions, and the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with groups and individuals interested in history, with staff and volunteers and the public.

Physical Requirements: Regularly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds.

Work Environment: Work is normally performed in a normal inside office environment with appropriate heating and cooling and is not subject to significant occupational or environmental hazards other than those normally associated with general public contact, dust or odors.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Graduation from a four-year college or university in related field and 3 years work experience in a position that coordinated educational programs, experience in both teaching, and in management of subordinates

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
