We're looking for a hands-on, people-focused leader to take the helm as Plant Manager at our American Industries location in Jerseyville, IL. In this role, you'll oversee all facets of plant operations from production and equipment to materials, logistics, and compliance. This role has one clear goal: delivering high-quality reconditioned railcar components, on time and on budget.
You'll be responsible for driving performance across key areas like safety, quality, lead time, delivery, cost, and customer satisfaction. Then, just as important, you will be a builder of strong teams, efficient processes, and a culture of continuous improvement. You'll lead efforts in workforce development and capital planning, all while making the plant a safer, more productive, and more rewarding place to work. Duties/Responsibilities:
Leadership & Culture
- Shape and reinforce a strong, respectful, people-centered plant culture aligned with company values.
- Model and uphold the company's expectations for behavior, teamwork, and performance.
- Coach and mentor supervisors and staff to build leadership capabilities and technical skills.
- Conduct performance evaluations, address personnel issues in coordination with HR, and manage vacation approvals.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
- Lead weekly safety audits and daily shift huddles focused on surfacing issues and fostering a proactive safety mindset.
- Investigate safety incidents thoroughly and implement measures to eliminate future risk.
- Manage plant programs to meet safety and environmental goals, and coordinate emergency responses as needed.
Operations Management
- Conduct periodic Gemba walks to ensure supervisors are responding to visual controls and operational needs.
- Maintain a strong presence on the shop floor and support maintenance efforts when needed.
- Ensure material inventory meets production requirements for the next 180 days.
- Monitor and manage daily, weekly, and monthly operational reporting.
- Take ownership of the Continuous Improvement (CI) Newspaper process and support CI activities across the plant.
- Lead budget planning and management to meet financial goals.
Talent & Staffing
- Partner with Human Resources to interview, select, and onboard team members for all facility roles.
- Provide clear direction and resources to ensure teams have what they need to meet targets.
- Promote team involvement, open communication, and employee engagement.
Skills/Experience Requirements:
- Proven experience leading operations in a manufacturing environment, ideally with direct supervisory responsibility.
- Strong background in safety, compliance, and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and coaching skills.
- Solid understanding of inventory management, budgeting, and performance metrics.
- Ability to respond effectively to changing priorities and unexpected challenges.
- Experience with SAP is preferred.
Production Schedule:
- 1st shift: Monday – Friday, 6am – 2:30pm.
