LIFEGUARD JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Lifeguard

SUPERVISOR: Asst. Aquatics Director; Aquatics Director; Pool Manager

DEPARTMENT: Aquatics

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time 40 hours

The primary purpose of employees in this class is to prevent drowning and other injuries from occurring. Candidates must be able to ensure the safety of patrons by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors. This person will need to be able to solve on-the-job issues by utilizing critical thinking and decision making skills. They have the ability to understand and follow rules, procedures, and directions. They also work independently and as part of a team in a diverse community without prejudice towards religion, gender, socioeconomic status, and sexual orientation.

· Current Red Cross Lifeguard or Shallow Water Lifeguard Certification; or willingness to obtain one upon employment.

· Must be available to work early mornings, and/or weekends.

· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

· Ability to maintain alertness while sitting, standing, or walking for various lengths of time.

· Extended exposure to sunlight and heat.

· Exposure to hazardous pool chemicals.

· Monitors aquatics areas as assigned and perform all emergency care as necessary.

· Maintains active surveillance of patrons in designated zones; acts immediately and appropriately to maintain health and safety.

· Recognizes and responds effectively in emergency situations by activating the Gordon JCC's Emergency Action Plan.

· Communicates and enforces all Gordon JCC pool policies and rules in a professional and personable manner.

· Dress and appearance are consistent with the Gordon JCC standards including wearing your swimsuit, guard shirt, whistle, hip pack, appropriate guard shorts, and tube while on duty.

· Conduct pool inspections and complete pool chemical logs and report imbalances or concerns to the supervisor.

· Proper radio protocol and response in a timely manner, including communication to the front desk, security, and supervisors.

· Complete daily cleaning assignments.

· Attend and participate in four hours of in-service each month.

· Provide a welcoming environment for all patrons.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

· Ability to recognize and respond to emergencies through applicable lifeguard rescue techniques and surveillance as outlined by the American Red Cross

· Ability to display a high level of customer service to patrons, staff, and community members.

· Ability to display a positive attitude for all patrons and Gordon JCC staff.

· Ability to assess a situation and make an informed decision independently.

· Positively promotes Gordon JCC to peers and patrons and take initiative to be involved at the workplace.
