The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking two Marine Electrician Apprentices to perform marine electrical work in accordance with Federal, State, and US Coast Guard (USCG) regulations. This position supports Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility in its mission to provide preventative maintenance and emergency repair for ferry vessels and terminals. Duties include new installations of equipment, cabling, and electronics, diagnostics of PLC's PLC-controlled systems, motors, motor controllers, advanced electronic equipment, and complex control systems.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Marine Electrician Apprentice will:
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical issues on vessels and at terminals.
- Perform preventative maintenance for vessels and terminals.
- Perform insulation resistance testing.
- Installation and maintenance of fiber optics. .
- Inspects and maintains electrical motors.
- Maintain DC batteries.
- Completes infrared scanning of electrical equipment.
- Install new electrical distribution equipment, relay, and PLC-based controls.
- Install and maintain new and existing electrical components and equipment.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
Apprenticeship Status
- Enrolled in a recognized Marine Electrician apprenticeship program.
Technical Comprehension & Application
- Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and apply instructions, plans, blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
Problem-Solving & Strategic Thinking
- Ability to analyze issues, think independently, and develop solutions within established policies and procedures.
Task Management & Prioritization
- Proven ability to prioritize work, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines in both routine and emergent situations.
Teamwork & Adaptability
- Experience working both independently and collaboratively; able to adapt to changing priorities and work environments.
Communication & Relationship Building
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Physical Capability
- Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 35 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally, as reflected in prior work history or certifications.
Safety & Compliance Readiness
- Ability to meet regulatory medical/respiratory questionnaire requirements and maintain annual respirator fit testing.
- Willingness and ability to use respiratory protection when required.
Licensing & Credentialing
- Possession of a valid Washington State driver's license.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within 90 days of hire.
Regulatory Testing Requirements
- Willingness to comply with DOT-mandated pre-employment and random drug testing.
- Ability to successfully complete an electrical system diagnostic/troubleshooting assessment if required.
