QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required: Master's degree in Theology, related discipline or equivalent.
  • Required: Experience in spiritual care in a hospital, preferably a chronic care or rehabilitation facility.
  • Required: Endorsement by recognized faith group for ministry in a specialized setting.
  • Preferred: Ordained or Commissioned for ministry by own faith tradition.

    • JOB SUMMARY

  • The Chaplain's primary responsibility is to deliver pastoral care and religious/spiritual needs of to patients, loved ones, and as appropriate, staff. The Chaplain ministers with persons of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. The Chaplain collaborates with the Coordinator of Pastoral Care to ensure that religious, and spiritual and emotional well being of patients and their loved ones are met. He/She communicates and provides liaison to the religious community.

    • PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Job requires walking to different areas and levels of the hospital daily. Standing in one place can range from 20 to 30+ minutes either at the bedside or in the conduct of special services.
  • Job requires sitting at desk functions or at meetings for up to 120 minutes at a time. Reaching and bending as related to accessing file drawers and documents on shelves as well as operating audiovisual equipment and obtaining materials from chapel cupboards and the storage closet.
  • Job involves carrying documents, books, chairs or small equipment/furniture i.e. portable radio/tape/CD player, chapel lectern, flowers and miscellaneous items).
  • Fine manipulation is required as related to writing, computer usage, and presiding at worship both in formal settings and at the bedside.

    • COGNITIVE DEMANDS

  • Job requires problem identification skills. A high degree of selective attention, discernment, perception and/or concentration is essential. Abstract reasoning and adaptability to changing environments, new information and quick decision-making ability are required.
  • Job requires a high level of communication skills including (1) active listening, (2) the ability to establish an empathetic and affirming climate in interpersonal dialogue, (3) the ability to express abstract/complex ideas and initiate/negotiate dialogue with multiple parties, (4) the ability to deliver meaningful/healing theological reflections to interfaith populations, (5) the ability to function well in group settings.
  • Job requires a high degree of writing proficiency including attention to detail and development/set-up of service programs and other pastoral care publications.
  • Job requires reading and auditory comprehension of abstractions and an ability to make inferences. A working knowledge of professional/medical documentation and terminology is necessary.

    • WORK DEMANDS

  • Job requires working primarily indoors. Job requires travel to and from HSC facilities and to memorial/funeral services in the community as appropriate. Job requires a high degree of emotional energy and mental alertness while working frequently around and with patients, residents, loved ones, and staff. Schedule fluctuation is frequent and sometimes unpredictable. Job requires emergency response. Must have the ability to handle stress associated with ministering in various areas of need (i.e. pain, suffering, loss, death, and grief). There may be occasional exposure to body fluids and blood-borne pathogens.

    • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assesses and implements a plan of care in a holistic manner to meet an individual's needs in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Advocates for patients/families on behalf of spiritual/religious values and traditions.
  • Collaborates to provide Sunday worship services and other special services.
  • Communicates with Eucharistic ministers and other volunteers to implement a plan of care.
  • Assists patients/families in using their faith in dealing with stress of illness/injury.
  • Serves as a liaison with community clergy.
