Data Scientist London Paddington
The Data Scientist at Virgin Media will play an important role in developing predictive models, analysing complex datasets, and supporting the delivery of data‑driven products that drive value across the business. This role sits within our fraud and credit risk domain, where you will help build and maintain models that detect fraud, assess customer risk, and strengthen decision‑making for critical business processes.
This is an excellent opportunity for early‑career data scientists — including MSc/PhD graduates — to gain hands‑on experience building production‑grade models in a fast‑moving, high‑impact environment. You will work as part of a high‑performing data science & insight team, contributing to the wider modelling ecosystem and supporting the ongoing development of analytical capabilities across Virgin Media.

Role Purpose You’ll be part of our Data Science organisation, which creates data products that provide Virgin Media with competitive advantage. We apply statistics and machine learning to uncover insights, enable risk‑based decisioning, and automate processes across the business.
In this role, you will support the development, monitoring, and improvement of models used in credit risk assessment, fraud detection, and responsible customer decisioning. You will also contribute to data exploration, feature development, and analysis that helps shape risk strategies, reduce losses, and ensure Virgin Media is protected from emerging fraud threats.
You will help maintain the predictive models and segmentation tools that feed core business infrastructure, ensuring they remain accurate, reliable, and compliant.
Core Skills
Strong academic background in a STEM field (MSc or PhD preferred) or 1-2 years of commercial data science experience
Solid grounding in statistics, probability, and core machine learning concepts
Experience applying ML techniques to real‑world datasets
Interest or exposure to natural language processing or large language models (LLMs), with a desire to learn more about agentic AI and call‑centre automation use cases
Ability to translate business questions into clear analytical approaches
Familiarity with A/B testing and experimentation
Practical experience with SQL and Python (numpy, pandas, scikit‑learn, matplotlib, etc.)
Clear communication skills, including explaining technical concepts to non‑technical partners
Curious, proactive, and comfortable exploring new methodologies and technologies
Ability to work in a shipping/iterative product environment and contribute to continuous improvement
Key Responsibilities
Build and maintain predictive models that support Virgin Media’s key business functions
Contribute to the development of AI components for our LLM‑powered call‑centre automation platform
Conduct detailed data exploration to identify opportunities for optimisation and automation
Support model monitoring, performance evaluation, and continuous improvement
Develop clean, production‑ready analytical code
Collaborate with data engineers, product teams, and operational partners to ensure high‑quality delivery
Champion a data‑driven mindset across the business
