Job Description

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS: Responsible for driving school bus and transporting students safely to and from school.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Driving bus on an established route, picking up and dropping off students at stops established by supervisor.
• Helping students with special needs to board and exit the bus.
• Perform daily safety checks of bus and equipment.
• May transport students to and from locations other than schools, as assigned.
• Administer student discipline program related to school buses.
• Perform minor maintenance and cleaning tasks to ensure safe and efficient operations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

• Transportation Maitnenance Supervisor

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES NECESSARY:

• Ability to obtain a valid Virginia Commercial Driving License with a passenger endorsement
• Ability to operate school bus safely and appropriately
• Knowledge of state traffic regulations

TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND MACHINES:

• School bus

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Sufficient strength, agility, dexterity, vision and vision acuity to drive a school bus up to 150 miles a day
• Operate door mechanisms, components and special equipment
• Good hand-foot-eye coordination
• Ability to jump from a height of 3 to 4 feet for bus evacuation
• Moderate lifting and carrying, moderate pushing and pulling, reaching in front of body and overhead, sitting in a confined position, walking, bending, stooping, squatting and climbing.
• Exposed to road hazards, including accidents, vehicle exhaust fumes, load noises, and adverse weather conditions.
• Requires strict adherence to safety rules, policies and procedures, and the use of safety equipment.
• No criminal background or history of drug or alcohol abuse.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required
• Previous bus driving experience
• CDL
