Sanitation / Dishwasher Team Member – Café

Location: Starter Bakery Café
Reports to: Café Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Role

The Sanitation / Dishwasher Team Member plays a vital role in supporting daily café operations at Starter Bakery. This position is responsible for maintaining a clean, organized, and sanitary café environment by washing dishes and utensils, cleaning kitchen and customer areas, and supporting food safety and workplace safety standards. This role directly contributes to smooth operations, strong teamwork, and an excellent guest experience.

Key Responsibilities Dishwashing & Cleaning

• Wash, sanitize, dry, and properly store dishes, utensils, pots, pans, trays, and small equipment
• Operate and maintain the dishwashing machine and three-compartment sink according to health department standards
• Keep the dishwashing area clean, organized, and safe at all times
• Clean and sanitize food-contact surfaces, prep tables, sinks, and café equipment
• Sweep, mop, and clean floors, walls, drains, and trash areas
• Clean and restock restrooms and employee areas as assigned
• Empty trash, compost, and recycling regularly and dispose of waste properly
• Follow the Café Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS) to ensure timely completion of cleaning tasks

Food Safety & Compliance

• Follow all health department, food safety, HACCP, OSHA, and company GMP policies
• Safely handle, dilute, label, and store cleaning chemicals and sanitizers
• Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly at all times
• Report safety hazards, spills, equipment issues, or maintenance concerns immediately
• Complete cleaning and sanitation logs accurately
• Support inspections and audits as needed

Café Support

• Assist with front-of-house (FOH) cleaning, including wiping tables, cleaning counters, and mopping customer areas
• Support café teams by keeping dish flow organized during service
• Help restock cleaning supplies, paper goods, and back-of-house essentials
• Work collaboratively with café staff to maintain a clean, safe, and efficient workspace

Training & Teamwork

• Participate in ongoing training related to sanitation, food safety, and workplace safety
• Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and cleaning instructions
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support café operations and business needs

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• Previous experience as a dishwasher, sanitation team member, or café support role preferred
• Basic understanding of food safety and sanitation practices
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
• Strong attention to detail and cleanliness
• Reliable attendance and punctuality
• Valid Food Handler's Certificate (or ability to obtain upon hire)

Physical & Work Environment

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (8–10 hour shifts)
• Ability to lift, push, and carry up to 50 lbs
• Frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive motions
• May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Fast-paced café environment with exposure to water, heat, cold storage, and cleaning chemicals
