The normal starting pay for this position is the minimum of the pay range listed above. A higher rate of pay may be considered, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant and/or the City's step placement policy.
This position may be underfilled as an Equipment Operator Provisional with a pay range of 410 - $ $29.08 hourly.
ELIGIBILITY LIST PREFERENCE ORDER
Full-time City employees will receive preference in the following order: major division first, then department, then all other full-time City employees. Part-time/year-round City employees will receive preference next. If there are no qualified full-time City employees or part-time/year-round City employees, external applicants will then be considered (when the vacancy is open to external applicants).

POSITION DESIGNATION
This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.
JOB SUMMARY
This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Street and Drainage Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. The skills, knowledge, and abilities required for full performance must be acquired prior to assuming the position. Incumbents must possess all necessary licenses and certifications prior to operating the assigned equipment and must successfully complete departmental training programs designed to enhance basic equipment operation, maintenance, and safety skills. Essential job functions include : driving and/or operating various pieces of light and heavy construction or maintenance equipment and responsibility for following all safety and maintenance procedures relating to the proper operation and condition of the assigned equipment. A Construction Equipment Operator I may be expected to complete specific tasks using the following pieces of equipment: front-end loaders, graders, dozers, slurry seal machines, tractors, backhoes, tandem trucks, tractor-trailer rigs, vectors, and slope mowers. Specialized attachments such as snowplows, trailers, winches, etc., may be used to complete specific job assignments. At the discretion of the department or division, the incumbent may operate equipment such as snow brooms, snow-blowers, power brooms, and crawlers infrequently or in emergencies. The incumbent may work independently in delivering materials and equipment or in conjunction with other workers and equipment while on construction or maintenance projects. In the absence of a supervisor the incumbent may be expected to assume lead-worker responsibility for other employees, equipment, and effective completion of projects. Due to equipment malfunctions, limited worker availability, or adverse weather conditions, this classification may be expected to perform crew or maintenance-type tasks. Work instructions are received verbally and in writing, with work reviewed by a supervisor through inspection and written reports.
VETERANS PREFERENCE
Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City and who meet the qualifications for the position shall be given preference. To receive preference, veterans must submit verification of honorable discharge from the United States military service (Department of Defense Form DD214 or NGB Form 22) prior to the closing date of the vacancy announcement.
JOB REQUIREMENTS – GENERAL
- Knowledge of the assigned equipment types and functions (Dependent on Department).
- Knowledge of and ability to operate gauges, controls, pedals, levers, and switches found on the equipment used.
- Knowledge of various construction materials and types of soils and surfaces.
- Knowledge of and skill in operating various equipment attachments.
- Skill in driving/operating the assigned equipment safely.
- Ability to safely operate the equipment used on the job.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work both independently and with others.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations.
- Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License (CDL) (Dependent on Department: Airports-Class B; Parks and Recreation and Utilities-Class A; Public Works-Class A without Automatic Transmission or Tractor Trailer Restriction).
NOTE: An individual selected for a position in the Airports, Parks or Utilities Departments who does not possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License will be classified as an Equipment Operator Provisional and compensated at the Equipment Operator Provisional salary range until such time as required licensure is obtained. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License within twelve (12) months from the date of hire/promotion/
