SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Provide mentorship and support for justice-involved youth, helping them build a stable foundation for long-term success. Our services assist with probation and post-release supervision while offering re-entry support to promote positive life outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Mentor Matching and Engagement
- Oversee the matching of adult mentor/peer mentor-mentee relationships.
- Engage with youth and promote positive youth development through mentoring guidance and support.
- Conduct community outreach to recruit volunteers as peer mentors.
- Case Management and Coordination
- Provide case management and coordination services to youth referred by Judiciary, Family Court, and the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility Juvenile Probation.
- Conduct screenings and intakes.
- Play a key role in the treatment team by scheduling and coordinating assessments and service planning meetings.
- Develop youth- and family-driven service plans based on completed assessments.
- Ensure smooth transitions during referrals and coordination of services.
- Program Orientation
- Orient youth and their families to the program.
- Mentor Oversight
- Act as an adult mentor overseeing and coordinating with the peer mentor.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
- High school plus additional training equal to 2 years of college, which requires knowledge of a specialized field or may lead to licensing (data processing, accounting, human services), or formalized apprenticeship program. For example, certified substance abuse counselor, bookkeeper, etc.
- Other (Specify):
- An Associate degree from a business or community college, or formal training in fields such as psychology, human services, or counseling. The role requires the ability to understand and effectively carry out assigned duties.
- Bachelor's Degree preferred. Knowledge of a specialized field or may lead to licensing (human services), or formalized apprenticeship program preferred.
EXPERIENCE
- Over two years, up to and including four years
- Other (Specify): Two years' experience working with at-risk youth, preferably youth who have been involved with the juvenile justice system.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Participates in the implementation of a trauma-informed approach to education and behavior management, that promotes relationship building, pro-social behaviors, cooperative learning, self-help skills, academic achievement, and strengthening daily living skills within an academic environment and experience with developing and implementing outreach strategies to recruit volunteer mentors from diverse backgrounds.
OTHER POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- This job requires a valid Hawaii driver's license and a clear driver's abstract and continued employment may be contingent on maintaining a clear driver's abstract.
- This job requires a valid Hawaii driver's license, a clear driver's abstract, and willingness to travel in personal vehicle on an as-needed basis throughout the island.
- This position is subject to a criminal background investigation and continued employment is contingent on a record clear of convictions.
- Continued employment in this position is contingent on successful completion of CPI classes OR other Behavioral Management certification as may be contract mandated.
- Continued employment in this position is contingent on successful completion of First Aid classes.
- Requires contacts both inside and outside the organization in order to furnish or obtain information and/or provide participant services. Normal courtesy, tact and discretion required.
