Long-term substitutes are temporary employees who support student learning by providing consistent instruction and supervision in classrooms for extended assignment periods. Assignment periods are defined as a minimum of 10 consecutive days and may last several weeks or months. In this role, you help maintain an engaging and productive learning environment and ensure the continuity of instruction for students. Long-term substitute assignments include either leading a classroom using provided lesson plans and instructional materials when substituting for a teacher or supporting student learning and classroom management when substituting for a teaching assistant.
Long-term substitute positions are needed throughout the school year and are posted on an as-needed basis. Applicants are encouraged to regularly monitor the District 116 job posting website for available long-term substitute opportunities.

Qualifications
- Meet Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) requirements for substitute employment.
- Valid Illinois State Board of Education Professional Educator License or Substitute License registered in Lake County Regional Office of Education (Region Code 34)

- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills; the ability to work with students and adults in a positive manner
- Ability to follow lesson plans, maintain classroom management, and support student learning
- Flexibility to accept long-term assignments as needed across the district
Essential Functions
- Provide consistent instruction and supervision in accordance with the lesson plans,classroom procedures, and district guidelines
- Maintain a safe, respectful, and orderly classroom environment
- Monitor student behavior and enforce school rules and expectations
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and administrators
- Collaborate with school staff to support students' academic and social-emotional needs
- Supervise students in classrooms and during transitions, lunch, and recess
- Take attendance and complete required classroom or district documentation
- Utilize instructional and classroom technology as required to support teaching activities, classroom operations, and safety protocols
- Become familiar with assigned classroom environment, grade level(s), and student needs
- Follow all district policies, procedures, and confidentiality requirements
- Perform additional duties as assigned by building administrators or their designee to support school operations
Additional Requirements
- Successful completion of a criminal background check and fingerprinting as required by law
- Completion of district required and state-mandated trainings within 30 days of start date
- Provide evidence of physical fitness to perform duties
- Flexibility to accept long-term assignments across district schools
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and adapt to different grade levels or assignments
Language Skills
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Ability to explain concepts clearly and provide consistent instruction in a classroom setting
Physical and Mental Demands
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the classroom and school building
- Ability to lift or assist with materials up to 25 lbs
- Monitor students and maintain focus in dynamic classroom settings
Working Conditions
- Assignments at any District 116 school
- Indoor classroom environment; occasional outdoor supervision
- Work may involve exposure to students with a variety of behavioral, emotional, or learning needsSafety
