City of Traverse City
, is hiring an
Operator-In-Training
for our wastewater operations group.

You don't need prior wastewater experience, but those with experience are encouraged to apply. If you're mechanically or electrically inclined, have operational or mechanical experience, or come from oil & gas or related fields, we will train you to succeed.

This is a career path position, ideal for entry-level candidates with a great attitude and willingness to learn, or for experienced technicians looking to expand into infrastructure and reliability.

What You'll Do

  • Operate and maintain pumps, motors, valves, and piping systems.
  • Troubleshoot operational, mechanical and electrical issues, from control panels to wiring.
  • Support equipment installations, upgrades, and commissioning.
  • Keep accurate records of operations, inspections, repairs, and performance.
  • Follow strict safety protocols and environmental regulations.
  • Collaborate with a supportive team of technicians and staff.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation (compensation provided)

Schedule

  • Monday through Friday, 700 AM – 330 PM
  • 9AM-530PM for evening shift (approximately one week per month)
  • Weekend work/On Call rotation with operators (approx. one weekend per month)
  • Paid on-call rotation and weekend incentive pay
  • Occasional overtime as needed
  • Position will have on call responsibilities and will be required to work weekends as part of a rotation.

Here's what you'll need

  • High school diploma or GED (required)
  • Hands-on experience in mechanical or electrical work (industrial maintenance, mechanic roles, oil & gas, or similar fields preferred)
  • Strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and willingness to learn.
  • Valid driver's license with clean record
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and outdoors in all weather.
  • Basic computer skills and diagnostic tool use.

Schedule

  • Monday through Friday, 700 AM – 330 PM
  • 9AM-530PM for evening shift (approximately one week per month)

Ideally, you'll also have

  • Certifications in welding, heavy equipment operation, lubrication, vibration analysis, asset management, or other related areas

The base salary range for this position is $49,920.00 to $54,080.00; though will be paid hourly based on hours worked. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
