The Compounding Pharmacy Technician plays a critical role in supporting the safe, accurate, and timely preparation of compounded medications for patients. This position requires a strong understanding of sterile and non-sterile compounding practices, USP , , and compliance, and strict adherence to state and federal regulations.
Working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the technician is responsible for accurately compounding, labeling, packaging, and preparing medications for shipment, while maintaining the highest standards of quality and patient safety. The technician will also participate in maintaining cleanroom compliance, inventory control of raw ingredients, proper use of equipment, and documentation to support traceability and regulatory requirements.
In addition to technical compounding skills, the Pharmacy Technician is expected to cross-train across workstations, collaborate closely with pharmacists, managers, and other team members, and support workflow efficiency in a high-volume, multi-site pharmacy environment. Professionalism, attention to detail, and commitment to patient care are essential in this role.
Essential Functions:
- Responsible for maintaining and performing the highest achievable level of technical competence and work performance.
- Read and interpret physician's medication orders.
- Efficient and knowledgeable of basic principles, theories, laws, policies, and procedures that pertain to compounding- specifically USP , , , other USP general chapters, and best compounding practices.
- Prepares high-quality compounded medications (capsules, troches, creams, solutions, etc.) according to USP , and and other compounding rules and regulations in both ISO 5 environments as well as non-sterile hazardous rooms.
- Able to prepare batch orders as needed.
- Familiar with aseptic techniques
- Able to train and pass all pre-assessments prior to compounding.
- Performing compounding procedures, quality assurance/control checks, and preparation of compounded medications
- Understands and performs basic pharmaceutical calculations to obtain correct doses of medications.
- Adheres to appropriate safety and quality assurance practices and OptioRx policies and procedures. Complies with state and federal laws.
- Prepare and package medications requiring special handling in accordance with safety measures.
- Aid in the filling, processing, and dispensing of medications.
- Adhere to safety practices to ensure quality care for patients.
- Help maintain the drug inventory through inventory control practices.
- Triage requests and prioritizes them to drive efficiency.
- Other tasks assigned by the manager.
- Represent the pharmacy professionally and courteously in all interactions with patients.
- Report product incidents as required by pharmacy policy.
- Participate in surveys conducted by authorized inspection agencies.
- Participate in the pharmacy's Performance Improvement program.
- Initial, periodic and validation training as required by USP , and
- Any other duties assigned by the manager.
Qualifications:
- Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Certified Pharmacy Technician required.
- Certified PTCB required.
- Must maintain a Pharmacy Technician License in good standing.
- Experience/Knowledge
- Prior experience in Sterile Compounding Facility
- Accuracy for detail work and mathematical skills
- Ability to adapt to new situations.
- Ability to prioritize workload.
- Specialized Skills:
- Proficiency with technology use, MS Office Suite (Excel, Word), Outlook & Internet applications, pharmacy management systems, PCCA or other compounding software used by pharmacies.
- Familiarity with pharmacy practice settings, legal requirements and limitations, prescription information and calculations, drug identification and generic equivalents, drug manufacturing, packaging and labeling information, and proper drug handling and storage practices
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to continuously sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to bend or squat occasionally.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to be in ISO5 environment fully gowned for extended period of time.
- Abilit to be in pharmacy compounding lab fully gowned for extended period of time.
Successfully pass background check prior to employment.
