Job Description To help facilitate administration of relocation benefits if you are selected, please apply using the permanent address you would move from. Work Arrangement: This internship is categorized as hybrid. The selected intern is expected to report to the office up to three times per week or as determined by the team. Locations: San Francisco, California
Sunnyvale, California
Mountain View, California
About the Team: The trajectory generation team (TGX) is at the forefront of transforming scene understanding into holistic autonomous vehicle behavior. This team balances multiple objectives, ensuring trajectories provide a comfortable experience for passengers, comply with traffic laws, respect vehicle dynamics, and avoid obstacles while adapting to real-time road conditions. Our cutting-edge ML, RL, and optimization techniques enhance the GM driving experience and support these objectives. About The Role: As a Machine Learning Intern in the trajectory generation team, you will engage in meaningful research and engineering projects that contribute directly to the ML-driven planning stack. Your contributions may include implementing and benchmarking advanced neural network architectures for behavior prediction, enhancing data pipelines for trajectory model training, or conducting ablation studies on various learning strategies. You will closely collaborate with talented engineers and researchers, participate in code reviews and design discussions, and gain invaluable hands-on experience with production-level autonomous driving systems. You'll work with real-world driving data and simulation environments, potentially seeing your contributions used in test vehicles. This role presents an exceptional opportunity to merge groundbreaking ML research with vital robotics applications. You'll develop expertise in deep learning frameworks (like PyTorch), work with large-scale distributed training systems, and learn to validate models for autonomous driving. You'll gain insight into the challenges involved in building reliable AI systems, addressing edge cases, ensuring safety, and balancing model performance with computational constraints. This experience will expose you to the dynamics of ML team operations in a complex, multidisciplinary engineering organization focused on achieving full autonomy. What You'll Do: Implement and experiment with neural network architectures for trajectory prediction, behavior planning, or mission planning tasks.
Create data pipelines and visualization tools for processing, analyzing, and evaluating extensive driving datasets.
Train and benchmark ML models on distributed compute infrastructure, conducting ablation studies to optimize performance.
Validate models in simulation environments and analyze failure cases across diverse driving scenarios.
Engage in code reviews, team meetings, and technical discussions, ensuring documentation of experiments and findings.
Contribute to production codebases by prototyping innovative approaches for tackling complex driving situations such as merges or intricate intersections.
Required Qualifications: Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related STEM field.
Hands-on experience with one or more machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, or Keras).
Availability to work full-time (40 hours per week) during the internship period.
Demonstrated coursework, research, or projects in AI/ML.
Strong programming skills in Python.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with deep learning architectures such as Transformers, CNNs, or Diffusion Models.
Familiarity with deep reinforcement learning algorithms such as PPO, DQL, and distributional adaptations.
Experience in robotics through projects or research.
Understanding of multimodal learning or working with complex, temporal data.
Interest in contributing to publications, open-source projects, or patents.
Familiarity with systems programming languages (e.g., C++ or Java) is a plus.
Intent to return to your degree program after the internship.
Graduating between December 2026 and June 2027.
Compensation: The monthly salary for this role is $13,100 per month.
GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2026 Student Program.
What You'll Get From Us (Benefits): Paid US GM Holidays.
GM Family First Vehicle Discount Program.
Result-based potential for growth within GM.
Intern events to network with company leaders and peers.
