Position Overview
The Assistant Superintendent/Site Foreman plays a critical supporting role in ensuring successful execution of field operations on high-end retail upfit, commercial renovation, and multifamily value-add projects. Working under the direct guidance of the Superintendent, this position helps manage daily onsite activities, reinforces safety and quality expectations, and coordinates subcontractor performance.
This is a developmental field leadership role designed to support the Superintendent by executing delegated tasks, maintaining organized jobsite operations, and ensuring project teams have the information, resources, and oversight needed to keep work progressing efficiently. The Assistant Superintendent serves as an extension of the Superintendent—strengthening communication, improving workflow, and promoting a consistent standard of excellence on the jobsite.
Key Responsibilities
Project Coordination & Field Support
Assist the Superintendent with daily planning, scheduling, and coordination of trades and field activities.
Support implementation of the project schedule by monitoring progress, identifying delays, and reporting issues promptly.
Oversee task-level execution as delegated, ensuring subcontractors understand scope, sequencing, and expectations.
Track and coordinate material deliveries, storage needs, and onsite logistics to maintain workflow efficiency.
Assist with preparing jobsite layouts, temporary protections, staging areas, and general site setup.
Coordinate inspections, testing, and third-party consultants to ensure timely completion and compliance.
Safety Enforcement & Site Compliance
Actively support the Superintendent in enforcing all company and OSHA safety standards.
Conduct daily safety walks, documentation of hazards, and follow-up on corrective actions.
Participate in weekly toolbox talks and safety meetings, reinforcing field safety culture.
Assist with incident documentation, reporting, and corrective measures when required.
Help monitor compliance with permits, regulatory requirements, and environmental guidelines.
Quality Control & Field Productivity
Monitor workmanship for compliance with company quality standards, specifications, and manufacturer requirements.
Assist in resolving field conflicts by identifying issues early and escalating them to the Superintendent.
Support punch list development and execution by coordinating with subcontractors to complete corrective work.
Help identify opportunities for improved productivity, sequencing adjustments, or material optimization.
Documentation, Reporting & Administrative Support
Maintain accurate daily logs documenting manpower, weather, work activities, safety observations, and progress updates.
Assist the Superintendent in preparing weekly progress reports for the Project Manager.
Support tracking and documentation of RFIs, submittals, and field directives as assigned.
Help ensure the latest drawings, specifications, and project documents are maintained and accessible onsite.
Assist in monitoring change conditions, gathering field information, and communicating impacts to the project team.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field preferred; equivalent field experience considered.
1–3 years of commercial construction experience, ideally in retail upfit, commercial renovation, or multifamily projects.
Experience supporting field operations on projects such as office, retail, multifamily, healthcare, or industrial is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Solid understanding of construction means, methods, and sequencing, with interest in continual learning and skill development.
Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
Familiarity with scheduling concepts and tools (Primavera P6, MS Project, or similar).
Proficiency with project management platforms such as Procore, Bluebeam, or comparable field technologies.
Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with field staff, subcontractors, and project teams.
Organized, proactive, and capable of managing multiple priorities under the direction of the Superintendent.
Demonstrated ability to take direction well and follow through on assigned responsibilities.
Certifications
OSHA 10 required or obtained shortly after hire.
First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders/scaffolding, and navigate active construction sites for extended periods.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
Compensation & Benefits
Highly competitive base salary ($65,000 – $70,000 DOE)
Performance/job bonus program (typically 10–25% of base)
