Senior Software Engineer, Frontend Lead
An Important Note about Wayfair's In-Office Policy: This is a hybrid role based in Boston, and will require you to work in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Who We Are: At Wayfair we are well on the way to becoming the world's number one, online destination for all things home. Our core belief is that everyone should live in a home they love. We make this possible by ensuring our 24 million customers have all the technology and innovation they need at their fingertips, to give them access to our more than 33 million products which are provided by our 23,000 awesome global suppliers. In the Storefront team, we are the architects of the first impression for 24 million customers. As a Lead Engineer, you will be a technical anchor, ensuring our storefront is not only elegant but fundamentally resilient and high-performing at a global scale. If you love to solve real business problems at scale, in a fast-paced, high growth and agile environment, this is the role for you! What You'll Do: Architect & Lead: Design and implement complex, scalable frontend architectures using Next.js and React that serve as blueprints for the broader engineering organization. Systemic Optimization: Lead initiatives to optimize site-wide performance, including advanced Webpack configurations, Turborepo orchestration, and micro-frontend integration. Technical Roadmap: Partner directly with Product and Design leadership to translate high-level business goals into technical requirements and multi-quarter execution plans. Developer Empowerment: Build and maintain sophisticated developer tooling and CI/CD infrastructure that increases the velocity of dozens of other engineers. Operational Excellence: Drive the "Level Up" of our codebase by defining best practices in testing, accessibility (a11y), and state management (Apollo/Redux). Mentorship: Actively mentor junior engineers through high-impact code reviews, technical design documents (TDDs), and "brown bag" knowledge-sharing sessions. We Are a Match Because You Have: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 10+ years of professional frontend experience, with a track record of architecting, scaling, and maintaining high-traffic production applications. Expertise in Next.js and React, with the ability to navigate complex rendering strategies (SSR, SSG, ISR) and a deep understanding of framework internals to optimize for both performance and scalability. Mastery of frontend state management and data orchestration, including experience designing robust patterns using Redux, MobX, or Apollo/GraphQL that remain maintainable across large-scale codebases. Proven leadership in developer experience (DX), including the design and implementation of sophisticated CI/CD pipelines, comprehensive testing strategies (Unit, Integration, E2E), and custom tooling that elevates the entire team's velocity. Advanced knowledge of web standards and performance, including deep-dive optimization of Core Web Vitals, cross-browser consistency at scale, and a "mobile-first" approach to complex responsive design. Strategic awareness of the frontend ecosystem, with the ability to evaluate new technologies, advocate for architectural migrations, and align technical debt repayment with business goals. A champion of engineering culture who drives constructive code reviews, leads retrospectives, and mentors mid-level engineers to foster a collaborative, high-growth environment.
