Job Description At General Motors, our software teams are at the forefront of developing cutting-edge vehicle compute platforms. We're looking for an accomplished Software Engineering Manager to lead our BSP and Platform Bring Up team. This team plays a crucial role in delivering reliable, scalable, and high-performance embedded software for GM's next-generation vehicle systems. This position is ideal for a hands-on manager who maintains deep technical expertise, understands low-level system challenges, and effectively coaches engineers through intricate platform bring-up processes while ensuring high execution quality and collaboration across teams. Key Responsibilities: Lead and manage a dynamic team focused on BSP development, Linux platform bring-up, and low-level system integration. Provide strategic technical guidance for Linux kernel, device drivers, bootloaders, and board bring-up activities, partnering closely with technical leads. Oversee execution of early hardware bring-up milestones, including boot sequences, peripheral activation, and diagnostic readiness. Collaborate with cross-functional partners in hardware, silicon vendors, manufacturing, and program management to ensure alignment on roadmaps and deliverables. Proactively anticipate scaling, integration, and quality challenges across various hardware variants and software branches, driving innovative solutions. Implement software engineering best practices focusing on reliability, performance, diagnostics, and maintainability in critical embedded systems. Coach and mentor engineers, conduct performance reviews, identify top talent, and foster growth into senior technical or leadership roles. Encourage a collaborative team culture, shielding the team from distractions to maintain focus on essential bring-up tasks. Participate actively in the hiring process by defining role requirements, interviewing candidates, and strengthening GM's embedded and platform engineering talent pool. Qualifications: 4+ years of experience managing software engineering teams delivering complex production systems. 7+ years of experience in embedded software engineering roles with a strong background in BSP, platform, or system bring-up. Solid technical expertise in embedded Linux, kernel and driver development, bootloaders, and low-level system integration. Experience leading teams through early hardware bring-up and transition to manufacturing. A proven ability to balance technical expertise with leadership, ownership of execution, and coordination across teams. Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Experience with Linux kernel internals, device drivers, and familiarity with Qualcomm/NXP board support packages. Background in camera, display, or multimedia bring-up, including key frameworks like MIPI CSI, ISP, and V4L2. Familiarity with high-speed and low-level interfaces such as PCIe, USB, I2C, SPI, Ethernet, and WLAN. Knowledge of diagnostics, health monitoring, and fault detection in embedded or automotive systems. Experience supporting manufacturing processes and hardware validation. Understanding of automotive safety or compliance standards such as ISO 26262. This role requires full-time, on-site commitment at a designated location. Relocation benefits may be available. About GM: We envision a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion. We are dedicated to leading the change that improves mobility for all. Why Join Us: We believe in making meaningful daily choices to foster change through our words, actions, and culture, ensuring every employee feels part of the General Motors team.
