As a Senior Network Engineer in our Backbone Engineering team, you will be integral to our Infrastructure Strategy and Data Center Operations. This global team is dedicated to delivering and supporting technology infrastructure across the Salesforce Global Network to accommodate substantial business growth. Your role will involve collaboration with field teams, vendor sources, Global Network Operations, and application owners, ensuring innovative solutions are developed in a fast-paced environment. We seek enthusiastic technologists committed to operational excellence through standards, processes, and automation. The Backbone Engineering team focuses on network capacity and connectivity strategies, including peering relationships, capacity planning, and the architecture of backbone routing. Customer success and trust guide our engineering approach, ensuring a seamless experience for customers accessing Salesforce applications and data. Key Responsibilities: Collaborate with vendor sourcing teams. Develop and maintain vendor capacity metrics. Project manage new capacity installations with various teams. Update network and data stores for capacity modifications. Provide feedback and implement new network designs in partnership with different teams. Automate network configurations using Python and Ansible. Assist customer engagement teams with troubleshooting and connectivity issues. Manage BGP peering relationships and design peering networks. Oversee backbone router migrations and decommissioning. Document and approve network design life cycles collaboratively. Maintain Network Data Standards of Truth. Required Experience and Skills: At least 7 years of experience in production network environments. Proven project management abilities. Experience collaborating with telecommunications vendors. Familiarity with Cisco and Juniper carrier-class routers. Experience with Cisco Nexus-based switches. Knowledge of BGP and IS-IS routing protocols. Understanding of WDM technologies. Strong Python programming capabilities. Familiarity with Unix/Linux operating systems. Experience developing network automation tools (e.g., Ansible). Proficiency with Git or similar version control systems. Ability to manage multiple projects independently. Good grasp of AI, machine learning, and LLMs. A relevant technical degree is required. Preferred Qualifications: Managing co-located infrastructure experience. Familiarity with DWDM platforms (preferably Ciena and Cisco DCI). Experience with MACSec encryption. Expertise in network troubleshooting and monitoring. Hands-on production hardware life-cycle management experience. Exposure to Puppet, Terraform, Containers, and/or Kubernetes. Understanding of CI/CD principles. Experience with backbone router migration strategies. Experience with global, web-scale IP address allocations. Solid knowledge of transit and peering spaces. Ability to utilize public AI chatbots and coding assistance tools. Familiarity with the Salesforce core application. At Salesforce, you'll unlock your potential.
