Collaborating in multidisciplinary teams, we turn foundational research into rapid, field-ready applications, streamlining the data analytics process from acquisition and management to analysis and decision support. Responsibilities PNNL is looking for a dynamic Lead Data Scientist with a focus on geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) to make impactful contributions in research and development. You will be an integral part of projects that require innovative solutions to national security challenges, applying your expertise in data science, applied mathematics, and advanced analytic architectures. Your role will encompass: Designing and implementing innovative GEOINT data science solutions, tackling challenges in imagery analysis, object detection, data fusion, and geospatial workflows. Serving as a principal investigator or co-investigator on projects, facilitating the integration of interdisciplinary approaches. Leading the development and deployment of machine learning pipelines to manage and analyze extensive geospatial data in operational settings. Mentoring junior team members to foster technical excellence and professional growth. Identifying new research ideas and business opportunities related to evolving national security needs in GEOINT analytics. Building strategic partnerships to enhance our technical reputation and align project outcomes with sponsor goals. Collaborating with diverse teams, including software engineers and geospatial analysts, to convert research findings into practical solutions. Ensuring adherence to quality, safety, and security standards in all project tasks. This position requires onsite presence in either Richland, WA or Seattle, WA. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and 7+ years of relevant experience -OR- Master's degree and 5+ years of relevant experience -OR- PhD with 3+ years of relevant experience. Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree in data science, computer science, physics, mathematics, or a related field. Expertise in GEOINT workflows, including experience with remote sensing, multi-modal data fusion, and advanced geospatial analytics. Experience applying machine learning techniques for the analysis of hyperspectral data in geospatial intelligence. Proficiency in geospatial analysis tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and programming languages/frameworks such as Python, R, TensorFlow, or PyTorch. Experience deploying operational solutions with a focus on scalability and security. Track record in proposal development and securing funding for technical initiatives. Experience engaging with national security mission sponsors like DOE, DoD, or DHS. Demonstrated effective communication and leadership skills, capable of presenting technical concepts to various audiences. Additional Information This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
