General Function

The Career Development Specialist will coach students in job search strategies and techniques, including resume-writing and interview preparation. This position will work closely with career counselors to support drop-in hours and other Career Services programming.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coaches students and alumni on career development and helps them access related services.
  • Trains students in job search techniques including career management software, resume-writing, and interviewing.
  • Designs and implements workshops and seminars on job search strategy and related skills.
  • Provides information regarding the scope and availability of services to students through class presentations and workshops.
  • Reviews student documents virtually, including resumes and cover letters, in the career management software platform.
  • Answers departmental phone lines and email addresses to assist with scheduling and provision of program information.
  • Maintains awareness of current labor market trends.
  • Demonstrates use of Career Services software platforms including job board, interview software, and occupational databases.
  • Explains career counseling process to students and helps identify students who need follow-up with a career counselor.
  • Refers students to appropriate resources for information both within and outside of the college including, faculty, Student Affairs departments, and informational interview and networking opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements and Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in a social science discipline or business administration. One year of relevant experience in a career services office, human resource, or administrative setting. Bachelor's degree preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent understanding of job search strategies and techniques
  • Strong ability to explain complex concepts in an easy-to-understand manner
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with emphasis on word processing applications
  • Familiarity with Handshake, Simplicity, or similar career management software
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of Central Piedmont programs of study and their associated career fields

Working Days: Monday - Friday
