The Mission Neighborhood Health Center (MNHC) is a non-profit, multi-site community health organization offering comprehensive health services in the Mission and Excelsior Districts of San Francisco. The center offers primary health care services, adult medicine, pediatrics, family planning, OB/GYN, HIV and homeless services. We are currently seeking qualified candidates for our Controller position. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is a regular, full Time, exempt role with a salary range of $159,324 to $175,236 with full benefits.
Location: In person
Schedule: 8 am - 5 pm M - F
Primary Objective:
Under the supervision of the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller provides financial leadership and oversees day-to-day accounting functions, ensuring compliance with GAAP, integrity, timely financial reporting, and strong internal controls. Responsibilities include managing month- and year-end close processes, tax reporting, grant budgets and invoices, payroll, accounts payable, procurement, and preparation of audit worksheets. The Controller supervises six or more direct reports and must be able to perform all roles as backup to streamline processes and improve efficiency.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
Supervision - 30%
- Payroll, Grant management, Accounts Payable, and purchasing functions of the organization. Will ensure that all bills, expense reports, timesheets, and any other payments and respective supporting documents are processed in a timely and accurate manner. Accounts Receivable –ensures that receipts are posted accurately and daily. Grant management – prepares budgets, receivables and revenue reporting, compliance with regulations and providing guidance to Program Directors regarding their grants. Responsible for taking ownership pf all term-end close activities.
- Coaches and educates staff on policies and procedures of the organization.
- Evaluates direct reports within designated time frames, providing ongoing feedback, coaching, and supervision.
Primary Functions - 70%
- Responsible for closing the books each month and at year end, ensuring the proper recognition and recording of all financial transactions by the set timelines.
- Responsible for the preparation of monthly reconciliations on all balance sheet accounts and other accounts each month.
- Prepares the monthly financial reports for board committees and other special reports as needed.
- Prepares and maintains the 3rd party and patient pay revenue reconciliation on a monthly basis.
- Supervises and updates the fixed assets system and coordinates and oversees the annual physical inventory process.
- Prepares and submits all federal, state, and local tax returns ensuring that MNHC is compliant with applicable filing requirement policies and procedures.
- Ensures all schedule and work papers are prepared and ready for the annual financial and 401K audits.
- Acts as the primary specialist with regards to reporting functionality, creating reports, updates and maintenance of the Abila MIP accounting software.
- Leads the financial audits and coordinates with external auditors.
- Prepare and file Tax documents and ensure that the organization is compliant with its Tax reporting requirements.
- Assist MNHC's leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
- Other financial or operational related activities as deemed necessary from time to time as assigned by the CFO.

Skills and Abilities:

- Able to multitask, prioritize, meet deadlines, deliver presentations, and handle information confidently; demonstrates strong analytical skills, keen attention to detail, and hands-on experience managing multiple grants from diverse funding sources in compliance with GAAP and A-133.
- Effective supervisor with the ability to oversee and guide staff.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; well-organized professional who thrives in a team-oriented, multicultural environment and maintains a tactful, professional demeanor under pressure.
- Deep understanding of US GAAP and nonprofit accounting, with the ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels, including both finance and non-finance managers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in accounting.
- CPA Licensure.
- 8 years of overall accounting experience.
- 3 years of experience as a Controller.
- 3 years of management experience in the finance department of nonprofit.
- Can Set priorities and standards of performance; Develop plans by which work can be accomplished.
- Strong computer and analytical skills, particularly in the use of accounting and financial software packages.
- Strong experience with Abila MIP or Sage 100 fund accounting software.
- Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel, V look-up, and Macros.
- General office equipment, fax, copier, printer, phone, and computer.
- Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality when dealing with sensitive financial information.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working in the Healthcare industry.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit approximately 80% of the time, walk 10% of the time, and stand 10% of the time. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to type or handle, feel, and operate objects. The employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to speak and listen. Specific vision abilities of this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
