About the position
As a Laboratory Engineer DLW you will be the main responsible for the accurate and efficient operation of a specialized laboratory focused on doubly labeled water (DLW) methodology, a gold-standard technique for measuring energy expenditure in humans. This role will both support research excellence by ensuring the precision and reliability of isotope testing, as well as operating and optimizing process workflows daily, while ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
The position is in person, full time with benefits and located in Charlottesville, VA, USA.
Job responsibilities:
Manage the operation of the doubly labeled water laboratory
Collaborate with customers, researchers and Maurten R&D staff to design, execute, interpret and publish DLW testing and research programs
Work with Maurten staff (researchers, nutritionists, and physiologists) to develop research tools and products incorporating DLW technology
Sample Handling & Preparation
Perform precise dosing and dilution of isotopically labeled water.
Pack and prepare test-kits.
Receive, log, and prepare biological samples for DLW analysis.
Instrument Operation & Maintenance
Operate and maintain (including cleaning) laser-based water isotope analyzers and related analytical equipment.
Conduct routine calibration, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance.
Data Analysis & Reporting
Process raw data from and apply DLW calculations
Validate and interpret results, ensuring accuracy and reproducibility.
Prepare test reports for customers as well as technical reports to contribute to scientific publications when required.
Compliance & Safety
Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
Maintain accurate documentation for audits and certifications.
Method Development & Optimization
Improve analytical protocols for efficiency and accuracy.
Collaborate with the Sports Tech team at Maurten to automate the process flows and create a smooth customer experience from order to receival of test report.

In this role, you will be expected to bring innovation and creativity, developing new products, protocols, or procedures that meet the needs of a wide range of stakeholders. Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills are essential, including the ability to troubleshoot experiments and equipment issues, analyze data, and question results to make informed decisions and identify improvements.
Attention to detail is key, ensuring accuracy and precision in experiments, measurements, and documentation. You should be capable of clearly documenting processes, presenting findings, and writing comprehensive reports. Effective time management is crucial, as you will need to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Finally, we value collaboration and open-mindedness. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams and engage constructively with various stakeholders to achieve shared goals.
Formal competences:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related fields incorporating stable isotope analysis such as Earth, Atmospheric or Climate Science.
Specialization in isotope analysis or metabolic research preferred.
Hands-on experience with isotope ratio mass spectrometry, laser absorption spectroscopy or similar analytical techniques preferred.
Familiarity with DLW methodology preferred but not mandatory (training provided).
Proficiency in data analysis software and laboratory information systems.
