JOB TITLE: Irrigation and Grounds Maintenance Worker

Job Purpose Statement: Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, oversees irrigation and sprinkler system water resources; plans, designs, installs and maintains sprinkler systems; performs a variety of landscape duties to maintain grounds and perform general maintenance duties for various District owned property. May provide direction to others in the maintenance of the grounds.

Essential Job Functions:

Ensures a well-functioning irrigation system within the District by designing and installing sprinkler systems while taking into consideration water conservation, existing and proposed landscaping capacity, water flow rates, and time sequencing of existing systems.

Oversees the irrigation system preventative maintenance program by repairing and replacing pumps, main feeder and lateral lines, PVC pipes, sprinkler heads, radio controlled valves and controls, and electronically controlled water sensors; monitors and replaces low voltage wiring; develops watering schedule; monitors grounds for special events; performs routine irrigation system checks and repairs system malfunction.

Ensures an attractive and healthy landscape by mowing, edging, aerating, dethatching and patching turf and lawns; raking leaves and grass; trimming, seeding and laying sod; performing routine site evaluations for plant damage caused by stress, insects and disease; performing seasonal leaf and plant removal and bed cleanup; applying chemical applications and fertilizers; maintaining appropriate records.

Maintaining an attractive hardscape by picking up litter, bottles, and tree and shrub trimmings; sweeping, cleaning and washing hard-scape areas as needed; keeping hardscape areas clear and sanded in winter months; clearing debris from storm drains and reporting/resolving safety and site evaluation problems.

Ensures functional operation of equipment by performing routine maintenance on a variety of equipment, including, but not limited to power tools, power blowers, lawn mowers, edger, pruning shears and hedge trimmers;

Prepares athletic fields for activities by marking with appropriate marking materials or equipment to delineate the area of play and restrictive lines according to established procedures; grading and watering in-fields and building pitching mounds as directed.

Provides direction to other grounds maintenance staff for the purpose of completing projects, grounds maintenance and/or work orders efficiently.

Transports materials, supplies and equipment for the purpose of providing items at job site as required to complete work activities.

Other Job Functions:

Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the

completion of their work activities.

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

Skills to: install and repair large PVC supply lines; diagnose and repair multi-zone, multi-program irrigation system malfunctions; design and install multi-zone irrigation systems; operate trenchers, loaders, and skid-steers; operate hand and power tools used in general maintenance functions; keep records; perform basic arithmetic calculations for measurements and quantities; use English in both written and verbal form to communicate effectively with staff, contractors and/or the public; coordinate projects and provide direction to others.

Knowledge of: irrigation system installation, maintenance and operation; methods and use of materials, tools and equipment used in general ground maintenance functions; standards for safe use of equipment; and appropriate regulations and codes; proper lifting techniques; proper application of chemicals; proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.

Abilities to: use and operate grounds maintenance tools and equipment safely and effectively; perform general grounds maintenance duties including mowing, edging and weeding; perform minor maintenance and repair ground maintenance equipment and facilities; apply methods to perform general grounds maintenance and grounds reconstruction work; apply herbicides and fertilizers, properly plant flowers and trees; maintain and repair sprinkler systems, understand and follow oral and written directions, work cooperatively with others; observe legal and defensive driving practices, work independently with minimal supervision; perform a variety of tasks; interact with persons of various age groups and cultural/ educational backgrounds; adhere to safe work practices; adjust to flexible work assignments; work under time constraints; make judgments based on common sense; and meet deadlines and schedules.

Significant physical abilities include walking/standing for prolonged periods, lifting up to 50 pounds (occasionally), carrying/ pushing/pulling, climbing/balancing, shoveling/stooping/kneeling/crouching, reaching/handling/ fingering/feeling, talking/hearing conversations and other sounds, near/far visual acuity/ depth perception/field of vision, exposure to temperature changes/weather conditions/ mechanical and electrical hazards/dust.

* Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent

* Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance; valid driver's license and evidence of insurability

* Experience Required: Some job related experience.

Pay: $ $28.42 per hour
