POSITION: Elementary Paraeducator (long-term substitute)
POSITION DATES: February 2, 2026, position will be 4-6 weeks
LOCATION: Kalama Elementary School
SALARY: $22.27/hour
HOURS: 7 hours per day (9:30am - 5:00pm) **position hours may reduce after 3 weeks to 4 or 5 hours per day
BENEFITS: Position is not eligible for health or retirement benefits
SUMMARY STATEMENT
Under the direction and supervision of building principal, the Paraeducator performs tasks related to the monitoring and supervising of students on campus. A desire and ability to work with students is essential in this position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Monitor students during school; duties include, but not limited to recess, small group work and lunch room supervision
- Monitor students after school in our Chinook Station Child Care program
- Maintain safety of students and act as a positive role model
- Assist students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g. reading stories, listening to students reading, language, spelling, etc.)
- Work with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs
- Know and follow health, safety, and emergency procedures of the district
- Communicate successfully with staff, students, and parents
- Demonstrate professionalism through punctuality and minimal absences
- Promote and practice professional growth and development
- Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct, including the requirements of confidentiality
- Assist professional staff in the administration and correction of classroom exercises, tests and assessments
- Assist in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs
- Assist with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task
- Assist students in non-instructional areas, such as supervising the student lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, study hall, and other related non-instructional areas
- Construct, copy, and distribute and use educational materials as needed
- Assist students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, achievement if IEP objectives, etc.
- Follow all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs
Perform any other related duties as assigned

- Experience with Restorative Justice Practices preferred

- Ability to independently complete assigned tasks
- Knowledge of and ability to assist in reducing negative behaviors
- Knowledge of and ability to instruct in reading, writing, and mathematics
- Strong communication and problem solving skills
- Be able to follow directions in a cooperative work environment
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:
- Works in standard office and school building environments
- Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities
APPLICANT MUST:
- Be 18 years or older
- Have a High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Have completed one of the following requirements:
1) Documentation to support an Associate's Degree or transcripts to verify the comparable equivalence (i.e. 72 college quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited university, college, community college, or business school), or
2) ETS ParaPro Assessment with a passing score of 455, or
3) Pearson Paraprofessional assessment: 220, or
4) The MAster Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program: 65%
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
I f you are hired for this position, you will be required to complete a background check, unless you have completed the background check in the past two years, and it is on file with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).
