Work Schedule:

Academic Year (August-May) - 2:30/3:15pm-6:15/6:30pm, Monday–Thursday

Summer (June-July) - 9:00am-1:00pm Monday-Thursday

Note: position has breaks over holidays and between academic year and summer programming

Total: 12-15 hours per week

Compensation: $12-$14 per hour

The Training Center is a 21st Century Community Learning Center that provides experiential out-of-school learning opportunities to complement student's regular academic programs. The program offers free homework assistance, tutoring, social emotional learning (SEL), and other educational enrichment services to families of participating students in Kindergarten-8th grade who attend Marion Community Schools, St Paul Catholic School, and Lakeview Christian School.

Job Summary: The Middle School Site Assistant supports the implementation of afterschool and summer programming for students in grades 5–8. Under the direction of the Middle School Program Coordinator and Executive Director, the Middle School Site Assistant helps create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for students. This includes building relationships, facilitating activities, reinforcing behavior expectations, and providing academic and emotional support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Promote the values and mission of the Training Center 21st CCLC in all interactions with staff, students, parents/guardians, school personnel, and community leaders.
  • Commit to helping students cultivate strong mental health and wellbeing skills as they grow in confidence, set goals, and dream of a positive future.
  • Assist in provision of high-quality afterschool and summer programming for students that is welcoming, safe, inclusive, trauma-informed, well-rounded, and has a foundation in strong relationships.
  • Assist in supervising, guiding, and assisting students during snack and dinner, homework/academic time, recreation, and other enrichment activities.
  • Monitor student behavior during activities, effectively handle student discipline situations, and encourage and support positive behavior through implementing trauma informed practices.
  • Assist Executive Director and other program leadership in monitoring the security of the building at all times to ensure student's health and safety. Provide general First Aid when needed.
  • Communicate with the Executive Director and Middle School Program Coordinator regarding child behavior and program information.
  • Work with other staff to ensure a clean building is maintained, including cleaning classrooms, activity spaces, bathroom and kitchen areas after daily use.
  • Assist with tracking attendance and other student data.
  • Assist with implementation of interventions/supports to motivate and hold students accountable to completing school assignments well in pursuit of improved grades. Enhanced focus on Language Arts/Reading and Math.
  • Ride on the bus to help give directions to the bus driver and supervise student behaviors during student transportation from school, to off-site activities, and home after programming.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and ability to manage challenging situations.
  • Lead Middle School programming when the Middle School Program Coordinator is absent.
  • Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 20 years old
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening
  • Valid driver's license and vehicle insurance preferred
  • High school diploma required
  • Preferred 2 or more years of college
  • Preferred experience in an educational setting or child care program working with middle school students
  • Passion and heart for children
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations
  • Ability to organize and multi-task a variety of responsibilities and deadlines
  • Ability to work independently without constant supervision - self-motivated
  • CPR, First Aid, and Universal Precautions Certifications required within 90 days after entering position

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for periods of time
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Ability to lift up to 10-20 lbs
