Job Title: Emergency Veterinary Technician
Reports To: Technician Manager
Job Purpose: The emergency technician's main responsibility is the well-planned, accurate, and orderly flow of patient care and treatments in a critical care environment.
Job Description:
Exam Room
- Properly restrain patients for examination or treatment.
- Record temperature, respiration, and weight; collect appropriate lab samples, for example, fecal, blood, urine.
- Provide services such as nail trims, vaccinations (boosters), ear cleaning, suture removal, heartworm tests, etc.
- Conclude appointment by reviewing prescribed medication, products, and diets.
Laboratory, Pharmacy, and Diagnostics
- Collect blood from jugular, cephalic, and saphenous veins.
- Collect and run all routine lab samples.
- Track lab samples (in-house and outside services).
- Fill all prescriptions.
Hospitalization and Treatment
- Read and interpret patient chart, perform required treatments, and follow veterinarian's orders accurately.
- Provide injections, collect samples, and perform all treatments.
- Record and input all charges daily.
- Prepare discharge instructions and review with clients.
Radiology
- Know and use appropriate safety precautions for x-rays.
- Position patient for x-rays (for example, lateral, ventral dorsal (VD) chest, and abdominal), use proper settings, expose and develop film.
Surgery
- Admit patients and review preanesthetic lab work recommendations with client.
- Know and use appropriate safety precautions for gas anesthesia and dentistry.
- Prepare patients for routine surgeries with preanesthetic, clipping, aseptic scrub, and proper monitoring devices.
- Administer preanesthetic injection, calculate injectable anesthesia, induce anesthesia, intubate, and prepare patients for routine surgery. Monitor and recover patient using required checklist.
- Monitor patient post-surgery.
- Assist with puppies and kittens after caesarean section.
- Release patients and review instructions with clients.
- Clean, pack, and sterilize surgical instruments.
Dentistry
- Evaluate incoming patients and recommend dentals as needed.
- Complete preanesthetic lab work.
- Induce anesthesia and perform scaling, curettage, and polishing.
- Release patients and review preventive homecare with clients.
Other Responsibilities
- Maintain a professional appearance (for example, neat and clean uniform or other appropriate attire).
- Maintain a professional, courteous attitude.
- Attend and participate in all required staff meetings as appropriate to schedule.
- Assist emotional and/or grieving clients without undue stress.
- Perform other related duties as directed by the doctors, hospital manager, or Patient Care Director.
