Job Duties

This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by the US EPA Public Water System Surveillance Grant for a year period ending June 30, 2026. The availability of funding is scheduled for review annually and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.

The Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water seeks an Environmental Engineer Senior ("District Engineer") to join the Abingdon Field Office (AFO) team in providing technical assistance, guidance, and support for public water systems to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and sustainability. AFO covers the 17 counties and four independent cities of far Southwest Virginia, including 50 drinking water treatment plants. Abingdon is a rural area with four distinct seasons, outdoor recreation opportunities, close access to several higher education institutions, and home of the state theater of Virginia. AFO staff are collaborative, responsive, and maintain effective relationships with public drinking water systems.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Demonstrated knowledge of and applied experience in biology, microbiology, chemistry, core engineering principles, and quantitative analysis.
2. Established experience in exercising sound judgement and making well-informed engineering decisions.
3. Experience in conveying technical information clearly, engage with different audiences, and preparing comprehensive technical reports.
4. Proven experience in interpreting, analyzing, and applying applicable laws, regulations, policies, and complex technical documentation.
5. Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to effectively manage and develop professional staff.
6. Comprehensive engineering expertise in water-related disciplines, including civil, sanitary, environmental, or chemical engineering.

Additional Considerations

1. Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer in Training (EIT) in Virginia preferred.
