Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Assistant Store Leader/Assistant Manager to join our retail team. This role is vital in supporting store operations, driving sales, and ensuring excellent customer service. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, extensive retail management experience, and a comprehensive understanding of store functions including inventory control, merchandising, and team supervision. Responsibilities
- Assist in managing daily store operations to ensure efficiency and high standards of customer service
- Support hiring, onboarding, training, and development of staff to foster a motivated and skilled team
- Oversee inventory management, stock replenishment, merchandising, and pricing strategies to maximize sales
- Handle payroll processing, bookkeeping, cash handling, and POS transactions with accuracy
- Supervise staff schedules, shift management, and ensure adherence to company policies and procedures
- Conduct employee orientation sessions and participate in interviewing prospective team members
- Manage customer relations by addressing inquiries, resolving complaints, and ensuring a positive shopping experience
- Assist with marketing initiatives, promotional displays, and sales strategies to increase store traffic and revenue
- Monitor store performance metrics such as retail math, sales management, inventory control, and budgeting
- Support purchasing decisions and vendor relations to optimize product availability and pricing
- Lead by example in demonstrating excellent communication skills, phone etiquette, organizational skills, and leadership qualities
- Adhering to operational policies and procedures (cleanliness, animal care, safety and security) that ensure exceptional service is provided to our neighbors
Requirements
- Proven experience in retail management or assistant manager roles with supervising responsibilities
- Strong knowledge of inventory management systems, POS operations, merchandising, and retail math
- Excellent communication skills; bilingual or multilingual abilities are preferred
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to motivate teams and manage multiple priorities effectively
- Experience with employee orientation, training & development, recruiting, payroll processing, bookkeeping, and cash handling
- Familiarity with marketing strategies, store merchandising, stock management, pricing policies, and sales management
- Organizational skills with attention to detail in inventory control and administrative tasks
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while maintaining a customer-focused approach
- Prior experience in grocery or retail stores is advantageous
- Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and a proactive attitude towards problem-solving
- 2+ years of experience leading a retail team
- 4-year college degree or equivalent work experience
- Ability to operate all equipment – including a forklift – to run the store is important, as well as being able to climb ladders, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds (that cat litter can be heavy)
