This role involves the performing of a variety of routine laboring tasks within the Highway/ Parks Department including the construction, maintenance, and repair of the Town's roads, parks, open spaces and buildings along with their associated facilities. Work is performed under department rules and procedures, and under the direct supervision of the Assistant Highway Superintendent.
Hours: 7:00am – 3:00pm, Monday – Friday; 40 hours
Location: 1 Della Bitta Drive, Plantsville, CT
Rate/Grade: $30.65 hr., Grade 2
Union: Town of Southington and the AFSCME AFL-CIO, Local Council #4
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs a variety of laboring tasks common to the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, parks, open spaces, and buildings along with their associated facilities
- Uses a variety of hand tools common to the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, parks, open spaces, and buildings along with their associated facilities (shovels, rakes, cleaning equipment, carpentry tools, etc.)
- Operates a variety of power equipment (chainsaw, mortar mixer, lawnmower, brush chipper, line striper, etc.) common to the previously described duties
- Operates motor vehicles under 26,000 # GVWR (pickup truck, mason dump, rack body, etc.) with or without snowplowing equipment on a regular basis and over 26,000 # GVWR with or without snowplowing equipment on an as needed basis
- Performs light maintenance, fueling, and cleaning of vehicles and equipment
- Performs duties on off-hours as required by circumstances such as snow, severe rain, emergencies, etc.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED Certificate
Special Requirements:
- This position is subject to random drug / alcohol testing and DOT physical requirements.
- Possession of a Class D Motor Vehicle Operators License issued by the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Eligibility and ability to obtain a Class B Motor Vehicle Operators License with air brake endorsement.
- Obtain a CDL license within one year of being hired.

- Sufficient physical strength and stamina as is necessary to successfully perform the duties of the class
Physical Demands:
Laborers must be able to lift and carry, up to and including 75 pounds. Infrequently, there are times in which laborer may need to exceed the 75; up to and including 100 pounds in weight. Additionally, individuals will need the physical dexterity to grasp tools, twist and turn and walk on uneven ground. Laborer will be working outside for lengths of time in which they will be exposed to severe heat and cold.
