Night Baker

For 40 years, Continental Bakery has been central Alabama's destination for artisan breads and pastries inspired by the tastes of Europe and elsewhere around the world. We're seeking a Night Baker to craft the beloved products that fill our cases each morning. This is a solo position during overnight hours — perfect for someone who loves the calm focus of baking and self-direction without the daytime bustle.

Compensation

• $16–$18 per hour, based on experience
• All employees are paid weekly via direct deposit
• Two breaks are allowed each night without clocking out

Schedule

• Work shifts begin Saturday, Sunday and Monday
• 5:00 p.m. – 3:00 a.m.
• Approx. 30 hours/week; additional seasonal hours possible
• Serves as backup for other night bakers when needed

Who We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will have direct experience baking bread products in a commercial kitchen, especially artisan-style loaves. However, we will also consider candidates with general kitchen experience and amateur bakers who can confidently discuss their skill level — particularly their experience with mixing, shaping, proofing, and baking breads.

Responsibilities

• Shape, proof and bake breads and pastries according to established recipes and techniques
• Manage production timing to ensure morning readiness
• Maintain a clean and organized baking environment
• Track ingredient levels and report low inventory
• Complete nightly closing tasks and uphold quality standards
• Work independently with reliability and pace management
• Participate in cross-training to support and learn from other bakers

Training & Onboarding

This position includes structured training and shadowing with our experienced bakers. Solo shifts begin only after the baker demonstrates readiness and consistency.

Requirements

• Commercial bread baking experience strongly preferred
• Relevant kitchen experience considered; knowledgeable amateur bakers welcome to apply
• Must pass a criminal background check
• Must provide professional references who can attest, with specific examples, to the applicant's ability to be trusted to work independently
• Comfort lifting up to 50 lbs and standing for extended periods
• Strong communication, responsibility, self-direction, time management and attention to detail
